There are 17 medical professionals in the current House of Representatives. 11 are Republicans. Trying to argue on most issues with the bill is difficult with such a tight deadline, but the one item most people -- including Congressional Representatives -- are reacting to negatively is the closure of Rural and Regional hospitals. This should be a negative for all of the Republicans, but the ones who understand what lack of medical provision can do should be especially ripe to listen, perhaps even be persuaded.

I live in Georgia. Rich McCormick is Georgia District 6, and I live in District 1. But he's more likely to respond to someone from the same state, especially if he has Senate or Gubernatorial ambitions in the future.

The list I found is through The Patients Action Network. If you are in a District with one of these Republican representatives, particularly if they specialize in Emergency or Family medicine, start calling and/or emailing. If you are in the same state, email them and let them know you have a long memory if they're thinking of statewide offices.

In the meantime, send support to the few Republicans in the House who have already voted against it and continue to oppose it. At the very least, let's make them miss their deadline for vacation.

Dr Rubin is a double board-certified physician who has a substack blog. From his first post about tracking FDA Recalls/Drug Shortages:

This was not a topic that I was initially planning on writing about, but because the federal government has recently put a pause on communications coming out of federal health agencies such as the CDC and FDA, I am going to regularly update you on what the FDA has listed in their recall list.

This is a matter of safety for the general public. Normally, you can sign up for alerts directly from the FDA. I have these alerts in my email inbox, but these communications are non-existent currently. Therefore, until the communications come back online, I will check the list and write quick summaries here.

You can sign up to his mailing list to get his posts sent to you daily.

Pharmaceutical company Vertex has developed a drug that provides effective treatment for many people with cystic fibrosis, reducing their symptoms, reducing the likelihood of other infections and in general improving their quality of life and life expectancy.

But in many countries (including a "rich" country like the UK, where it probably won't be available through the National Health Service because it really is that expensive), this drug is unaffordable. Just Medicine is urging people to write to Vertex's CEO to ask the company to lower the cost of the drug. There's more information and a template letter here that you can customise:

[personal profile] toastykitten left a great comment on our last check in post about two actions you can take to support pediatric cancer care.

Quoting from the post:
As pediatric cancers are very rare, there is often very little research and funding available, leaving many families stranded for support and care. [...] There are a few things that this community is asking support for:

1. Renewal of the Gabriella Miller 2.0 Kids First Research Act - this is the year it sunsets. This act supports funding and data gathering for kids with pediatric cancers and rare diseases.
2. Co-sponsor/support the Give Kids a Chance Act, HR3433, which provides for combinations of new cancer drugs for kids with cancer. This one does not cost taxpayers any money.

Both of these have been supported by both Republicans and Democrats, but there is a lack of awareness, as it's not an easy topic to broach for many people. My House Rep Swalwell, has pledged his commitment. So if you are so inclined, please send a message to your legislators!

Every home in the U.S. is now eligible to order 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests. The tests are completely free. Orders, which are being shipped by USPS, will usually ship in 7-12 days.

You can order your tests at https://www.covidtests.gov or go directly to the order page at https://special.usps.com/testkits

There's going to be a phone number for those without internet access, but that doesn't seem to have been listed yet. Also, the service is still in "beta" and there have been reports that people in the same apartment building but different units are being rejected as duplicates if one of their neighbours has already ordered kits. ETA from the comments: [personal profile] toastykitten says a workaround for the apartment building error is to put the suite number in the first address line instead of the second.

If you have health insurance, your insurance company is now obliged to reimburse you for 8 at-home tests per month for each person on the plan. You can see more details about this (and whether you have to pay upfront and claim it back or can get the tests free at the pharmacy) at https://www.cms.gov/how-to-get-your-at-home-OTC-COVID-19-test-for-free

As a follow up to the previous post about scam testing sites, the https://www.covidtests.gov website also links to the website where you can find legitimate testing sites that offer no or low-cost tests, even if you're not insured. You can look up sites in your state at https://www.hhs.gov/coronavirus/community-based-testing-sites/index.html

Hi everyone. This is from another Dreamwidth comm. Sounds like things are off to a good start now that #45 is no longer at the helm. This is a Zoom call with a former Commander-in-Chief and the then Vice President who fortunately received a promotion. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnuVEWNrCS0 . It's been a rough week with elections in the UK where a Tory majority was elected. In the US, the House Judiciary Committee has leveled two articles of Impeachment against Trump. We'll see where it goes. Also, for those following along at home, the next budget deadline is Friday Dec 20 for keeping the government open.

In comm news, as you've probably seen [personal profile] tanaqui  is going to start up a sister comm for UK actions in the wake of the election and is looking for co-mods and name ideas.

It's been an eventful week, with the release of transcripts of witness testimony from the impeachment hearings, ground rules being laid for the public hearings starting next week and some pleasing election results. Also not a good week in court for the Trump family, with Trump fined for misusing his charitable foundation and being ordered to turn over his tax returns to a grand jury.

Yesterday was the March for Our Lives on gun control led by the Parkland shooting survivors who are a great inspiration to me right now. I was unable to go due to a family commitment, but if you did go, [personal profile] rachelmanija  has a post about her experience where you can share yours. In all the coverage, I found this article from Vox about closing the passion gap between who politicians hear from on gun issues one of the most illuminating. The bottom line: on guns the voters they hear from are anti-restriction gun owners. They are not punished at the voting booth for "thoughts and prayers." If you regularly call your state and federal representatives, or even if you just want to contact them about gun control now, consider adding gun control to the list of topics.

In the comm, we've been carrying on with [personal profile] elucidate_this's great idea for Giving up on Giving Up for Lent. Thanks to [personal profile] nanila for making this week's Check in Post #3, and to the members who've inspired us by sharing what they're doing. Lent ends in 1 week. The Department of Health and Human Services is putting out a new “conscience” rule which would allow medical professionals to refuse care to patients for religious reasons.

Some people at risk if this rule is put into place:

-Religious personnel could refuse to help women who are miscarrying, even if their life is at risk.

-Women whose pregnancies endanger their lives might be turned away; doctors might even refuse to tell them about the risks in case they go to another facility for abortions.

-Doctors could refuse to treat LGBT patients.

-Bush era versions of the rule resulted in doctors refusing to provide care for HIV and AIDS.

The proposed rule would also create a new "civil rights" office dedicated to enforcing it, with the power to investigate whether organizations are complying and punish them if they don't allow employees to refuse care.

HHS is accepting public comments until March 27 at 11:59 EST. Comments are most effective if they give detailed reasons and are not copy/pasted from another source. You can read the proposed rule and comment on it at this link.

rydra_wong: The display board of a train reads "this train is fucked". (this train is fucked)

(Cross-posting from my DW.)

McCain's a no, Susan Collins is finding it "very difficult" to envision voting for the bill, and others are dithering or have expressed concern. But as I understand it you need three Republican "no" votes to stop Pence from tie-breaking, and Trump and co. are leaning hard on people to fall in line.

The latest trick is revising the bill to send money towards the states of potential holdouts.

So -- things are looking hopeful, but it's not a given that it'll fail.

[tumblr.com profile] bengaliprincess: heads up: as of right now, whip count for the graham-cassidy health care bill (trumpcare 3.0? i think it’s 3.0 honestly i’ve lost track) is split evenly at 50-50.

[tumblr.com profile] sashayed: Hello! Good morning! Did you know Congress is trying to kill millions of people, again? (includes script, with screaming; maybe leave out the screaming? or maybe don't?)

[tumblr.com profile] digoxin-purpurea: Anonymous asked: yeah that's part of the issue.... phone anxiety means i don't like to make people uncomfortable even if it's Very Worth It (contains very brief and good phone script)
