[personal profile] gingicat asked over on our suggestions post for resources for campaigning on abortion rights, particularly postcard campaigns.

You could start with NARAL Pro-Choice America. Last year, they put together a Pro-Choice Postcard Party Toolkit which you can download here as a PDF.

The kit includes a sample template message (on page 6) and maps showing states at greatest risk and states with pro-choice and anti-choice majorities (pages 11 and 12).

For the most up-to-date information on state laws, the best source seems to be the Guttmacher Institute, which tracks what's going on in state legislatures and courts and regularly updates the information on its site. It has put together a table with an overview of the major provisions in each state at https://www.guttmacher.org/state-policy/explore/overview-abortion-laws.

You can look at more detailed fact sheets for each state at https://www.guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/state-facts-about-abortion.

If you know of any other good resources that can help our members campaign on abortion rights, please tell us about them in the comments.

It's been a rough week with elections in the UK where a Tory majority was elected. In the US, the House Judiciary Committee has leveled two articles of Impeachment against Trump. We'll see where it goes. Also, for those following along at home, the next budget deadline is Friday Dec 20 for keeping the government open.

In comm news, as you've probably seen [personal profile] tanaqui  is going to start up a sister comm for UK actions in the wake of the election and is looking for co-mods and name ideas.

It's been an eventful week, with the release of transcripts of witness testimony from the impeachment hearings, ground rules being laid for the public hearings starting next week and some pleasing election results. Also not a good week in court for the Trump family, with Trump fined for misusing his charitable foundation and being ordered to turn over his tax returns to a grand jury.

It's been quiet in the comm, but do let us know in comments what you've been up to. It's always good to hear from you!

This week saw the launch of a formal impeachement inquiry into Trump, following revelations about the phone call with the president of Ukraine. And it turns out there isn't just one whistleblower but two, with other one alleging possible interference with the IRS audit of Trump's tax returns.

We've only had one new post in the comm, but plenty of ongoing actions -- those relating to immigration have new impetus from the news that the administration is drastically cutting the number of refugees allowed to enter the country.

And please do continue to tell us in the comments what you've been doing! It's great to hear about all the amazing things our members are involved in and a chance for you to inspire others to join in.

This week saw another Democratic primary debate, while an Appeals Court reinstated an emoluments case against Trump, people were kicked off a ferry from the Bahamas to Florida over confusion between the ferry company and CBP about documentation and the administration is planning on screwing up the Amazon even further (to add to screwing up the Arctic). How is it September already? I hope you're all having a good Labor Day weekend and that anyone in the path of Hurricane Dorian stays safe.

We've had a few new actions in the past couple of weeks that are listed below. And with another mass shooting in Texas yesterday, our ongoing actions relating to gun control are still sadly relevant. As, of course, are our our actions relating to migrants and refugees, with reports of further ways people are being targeted and mistreated.

Please also tell us in the comments what you've been doing! It's great to hear about all the amazing things our members are involved in and a chance for you to inspire others to join in.

It's mid-August - are you registered to vote? This is a good time to check registration deadlines in your state and to double check that you haven't been removed from the rolls. The fund proposed by Lilianne Ploumen, the Dutch minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, to replace the $600 million a year of funding from the U.S. which is being withdrawn through reinstatement of the "Mexico City Policy", has now been set up.

They're still working on the online payment options, but you can already make a direct bank transfer to the fund. More details can be found at:

On Tuesday, January 17th, join NARAL for an exclusive look at the shape of reproductive freedom under a President Trump. This is a unique opportunity for NARAL members to hear directly from our president, Ilyse Hogue, on the coming resistance to the Trump administration and the anti-choice ideology he has emboldened.

The call will give inside details on what NARAL and the pro-choice movement are planning for 2017 and the fights beyond. The speakers will discuss the specific threats to abortion access and basic health care and go over some of the specific strategies that will be needed to fight back.

With so many challenges ahead, NARAL and its one million member activists are uniting with leaders across the country to defend our most basic freedoms.

I'll be joining the call—will you sign up too? If you do, the NARAL team will call you at 8 p.m. EST on Tuesday to be patched through to the conversation.

Summary if the link doesn't work for you: There are state laws in California, Maryland, Vermont, and Illinois to back-stop the PPACA requirement that health insurance plans cover contraception, and similar bills may be introduced in New York, Minnesota, Colorado, and Massachusetts. In 28 states, insurance companies have to include coverage of contraception in policies, but not all of the statutes require contraceptives to be available to insured women *without copayments.*

The GOP congress is trying to de-fund Planned Parenthood as part of the package for repealing Obamacare. Planned Parenthood provides medical care for 2.6 million people, and shouldn't be defunded without a fight.

Although the Republicans have enough seats in the senate to pass the ACA repeal with no Democratic help, some Republican senators have indicated that they might be willing to fight to keep Planned Parenthood funding separate from that bill.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine has said that she's "not happy" to hear that Planned Parenthood's funding is being attached to the ACA repeal bill. In 2015, she worked with Sen. Lisa Murkowsi of Alaska and former-Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois to strip a similar provision from the repeal bill passed that year.

One Republican Congressman -- Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania -- is apparently also on the fence about tying Planned Parenthood's funding to the ACA repeal bill.

WHAT TO DO

Call your representatives! Especially if one of the people named above represents you -- but calling your rep can help regardless, especially if they're a Republican. Let them know you're out here and willing to kick up a fuss. You can also call your governor; governors can help put pressure on their senators and other members of their party.

Sample script: "Hi, my name is ________, and I'm a constituent of the Senator/Congressman/Congresswoman/Governor. I want to urge Mr./Ms. (name of rep) to save federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Don't allow Planned Parenthood to be defunded as part of the ACA repeal! Planned Parenthood's medical services are too important to me and millions of other Americans."

(If you don't already have your reps contact info, this post has links for finding them.)

We Won't Go Back

When I was in college, I was a volunteer with Planned Parenthood. While I was a nurse at UCLA Medical Center, for 14 years I took care of women who were having second trimester abortions. My AmazonSmile has been set up to donate to Planned Parenthood Los Angeles since AmazonSmile was created. I make a monthly contribution to Planned Parenthood. A few years back, I even sent money to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas to help keep their clinics open. This issue is important to me.

Since the landmark Roe v. Wade in 1973, I have witnessed a slow erosion of women's right to choose. I shudder to think what Vice-President-elect Mike Pence and his buddies in the Republican-controlled Congress have in store for the women of America.

The Nation: The War on Planned Parenthood Is Also an Assault on Poor Women of Color.

The youngest woman we took care of was twelve-years-old. She'd been molested by a family member beginning at the age of eight. But this young woman could easily have been one of my patients, too, and her story is more typical. I had an abortion at age 14 and I don't regret it. For eight years I let society shame me for my decision. But I'm not ashamed—and I believe no woman should be.

It's hard for me to believe that there are people in this world who would force a woman to carry a hopeless pregnancy to term, or punish her for deciding on an abortion. I took care of many women who had to make this impossible choice.

Interview With a Woman Who Recently Had an Abortion at 32 Weeks. Elizabeth* is 35. She grew up in the South, currently lives in Brooklyn, and has been married for two years. After a previous miscarriage at 10 weeks, she was overjoyed to find herself pregnant for a second time. At 31 weeks, she found out that the baby boy she was carrying wouldn’t be able to breathe outside the womb and would not survive. And at 32 weeks, she flew to Colorado to get a shot that would start the process of a third-trimester abortion; she then flew back to New York to finish the delivery. We talked on the phone two weeks into her recovery.

This was written by the physician who operates the clinic described in the above article. Stat: An abortion doctor on Trump’s win: ‘I fear for my life. I fear for my patients.’

You can support Dr. Hern's clinic: BOULDER ABORTION CLINIC RENOVATIONS AND SECURITY UPGRADES.

Quartz: Two case studies show what could happen in the U.S. if abortion were outlawed.

Here's another wrinkle. Abortion Clinics in Blue States Are Closing Too.

Last but not least: The Handmaiden's Tale: A Warning About Patriarchy and Power by Gloria Steinem. Let’s just say this novel is not exactly fiction.

If abortion rights mean as much to you as they do to me, here are some ways you can make a difference:

New York Magazine: How to become an abortion clinic escort.

The National Network of Abortion Funds. Abortion funds are nonprofit organizations that raise money specifically to help women and girls pay for their abortions.

From 2013 but still relevant: I'm a Case Manager for My Local Abortion Fund: Here's What Happens When You Call For Help

Planned Parenthood. There have already been 40,000+ donations made to PP in honor of Mike Pence. Finally, an internet meme that accomplishes something.

NARAL Pro-Choice America. I know Mike Pence would be pleased to hear that you were supporting NARAL.

National Abortion Federation. Hey, Mike's a big fan of theirs, too.
