[community profile] fandomtrumpshate is gearing up for another round, with creator sign ups opening at the end of January. This year, the auction is
raising money for roughly a dozen small, progressive nonprofits doing vital work on shoestring budgets: advocating for immigrant children, providing running water to Navajo communities, supporting incarcerated sex workers, and reviving local journalism, among others. Additionally, [...] supporting the whole category of organizations known as abortion funds: grassroots community groups that help people make the best reproductive choices for themselves.

Happy 2020 everyone!

A little bit of me was hoping things wouldn't be terrible right off the bat, but that's not the world we live in. However, even in dark times there is hope. We have an election this year where we can kick the turnip out. We can put pressure on the Senate to impeach Trump, a long shot, but worth doing anyway. We can support local governments and turn over state governments and inch by inch, county by county, make things better for people in our communities. We can show up to protests, write postcards, make phone calls, give money, and support each other. Change is an endurance event, and even in the face of overwhelming power and odds we can make things better.

What we do matters. This is a world worth fighting for.

A few announcements: @tanaqui has started a sister comm for the UK, @thissterlingcrew to serve much the same function for our friends living in their post-election world. It will have similar open posting of actions and information.

I'm clearing the cache of our list of on-going actions to start us fresh and for 2020, I'm going to try to do that every month.

[community profile] fandomtrumpshate is gearing up for another round.
Over the last three years, creators from over 150 different fandoms (!) have created over 850 fanworks (!!) and in doing so, helped to raise over $73,000 USD (!!!) for a bunch of different organizations that are doing important work to combat parts of the unbelievable nonsense imposed on us by the current administration.
Creator sign-ups for the 2020 auction will go live on January 13th. Details of the organisations being supported this year and other FAQs will be posted over the next few days at [community profile] fandomtrumpshate.

This week, impeachment efforts continue to move forward. Trump's policy on Syria is incoherent and inconsistent but consistently genocidal. And we might finally find out what's in those tax returns.

Do let us know what you've been up to. It's always good to hear from you!

This week saw the launch of a formal impeachement inquiry into Trump, following revelations about the phone call with the president of Ukraine. And it turns out there isn't just one whistleblower but two, with other one alleging possible interference with the IRS audit of Trump's tax returns.

We've only had one new post in the comm, but plenty of ongoing actions -- those relating to immigration have new impetus from the news that the administration is drastically cutting the number of refugees allowed to enter the country.

And please do continue to tell us in the comments what you've been doing! It's great to hear about all the amazing things our members are involved in and a chance for you to inspire others to join in.

A Happy New Year to all our members and a big welcome to the new Congress!

The shutdown continues -- sympathies to all who are affected -- and Cheetolini continues with his tantrum, but there are signs that Republican Senators who are up for re-election in 2020 are vulnerable to pressure to pass bills coming from the House that don't include money for the Wall. (Thom Tillis (NC) has joined Cory Gardner (CO) and Susan Collins (ME) in calling for an end to the shutdown.) So keep up those calls if you can!

We still have plenty of other ongoing actions. Fannishly, creator sign-ups for Fandom Trumps Hate open today and just before Christmas [personal profile] rydra_wong called for us to "Support your local muckrakers". Plus:

Protecting the Mueller investigation
Encourage your senators to follow Flake's lead

[community profile] fandomtrumpshate has moved to Dreamwidth and just announced the schedule and selection of supported non-profits for 2019.

Quoting from their promotion post:
FandomTrumpsHate is a pan-fandom fanworks auction dedicated to supporting those who are most vulnerable under the current United States presidential administration. Creators can offer any of five types of fanwork -- fic, art, podfic, vids, or fan labor (such as beta reading or translation) -- in exchange for donations to non-profit organizations. In our first two years, we've raised over $50,000 for a range of good causes.
All fandoms, large and small, are welcome.
The selection of non-profits includes lots we're familiar with here at [community profile] thisfinecrew (e.g. RAICES and RAINN) as well as some other great causes.

Creator sign ups open Sunday, January 6th and there's a post with all the other key dates.

I hope all our US members had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. [personal profile] tanaqui and I are working on getting a few of the suggestions folks had set up. We're looking to do a friending meme in the next week or so, and thinking about how to set up pledge for action/accountability posts to support better discussion and cheerleading.

Posts this week

Round 2 of Fandom Trumps Hate fanworks charity auction is getting under way

Housekeeping (the usual stuff)
Reminder that we have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru. Both [personal profile] tanaqui and I are very grateful for the help.

So, what have you all been up to in the last week?

As a little light relief in between Confirmation Hearings posts (because, good grief, Trump really did mostly pick the Worst People Possible, and researching exactly how awful they are is depressing), here's news of another fandom charity auction. This one will run on a monthly basis, and authors will offer fics in return for donations to charities and organizations serving marginalized people worldwide, at a rate of 100 words per $1 donated:

https://fightbackfic.tumblr.com/
Full rules at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1713svQT0pmL8HxvGowP6dDdxGjixSZkVdHBQM4TWD9Q/edit

The mod is asking authors, who choose the charity, to
focus on wide-reaching immediate-help things like, here’s getting healthcare to women in West Texas, here’s Lambda Legal, here’s a justice project that pays for lawyers for indigent clients, here’s my local food bank.

For those of you who enjoy a fannish approach to your anti-Trump Activism, a group of fans are organising a fandom charity auction on tumblr:

Also, a separate group are currently running an online art festival, with "Thirty days of art to piss off the President-Elect". I've seen this advertised in fandom spaces, so fandom content is definitely welcome!
