[personal profile] redbird posting in [community profile] thisfinecrew
After a very quiet couple of months on this community, there were 16 posts in January. I’m not posting a round-up: this is a check-in poll, including space in the comments to discuss reither what you’ve done recently, or what you’re planning to do.

Also, I just noticed the comment from a month ago that we would probably need a Venezuela tag. If you need a tag added, please DM me.

Went outdoors and took photos of the ICE vehicles circling the park across the street from my house, talked to neighbors who are part of the 'watch', and told off several white men who said something similar to "If you stay out of ICE's way and let them do their job you'll be fine".

Knitters are making red hats with tassels to protest ICE (based on a Norwegian act of resistance against the German occupation). The $5 pattern proceeds go to Minnesota immigrant aid groups. See Kamrin Baker, "
Knitters Protest ICE in Minnesota With Red Hats, Inspired By a Historic Act of Resistance," https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/melt-the-ice-red-hat-knitting-pattern? (They also have a crochet pattern btw.)

I called my own rep and senators, but I also called and left messages of support with representatives from other states who are working on getting ICE defended or on impeaching Noem, Hegseth, or Trump.

Something Else

Early in the month, I called my Senators to tell them not to let Trump invade Greenland, because good lord. Later on, I called my US Rep and Senator Markey about ICE, called Senator Warren about some financial issue I saw, called Governor Healey (in MA) about ICE, and I also called my old US Rep, since I'm technically still registered in my old district, and said things about ICE to *him*, too. Also, contributed a little money to an ICE victim's family. Also contacted my state rep about something ICE related. Did a couple sign-holding things with some local Indivisible things.

Something else: Practiced therapy with various people, some of whom are various flavors of queer, transgender, or gender non-conforming. (I consider this its own useful thing.)

I just knitted a friend one of the Melt The ICE hats, and I'm about to start making them for friends who want to go halfsies on the cost of yarn. I'm expecting to be busy knitting for a while.

Patterns are available for crochet and Tunisian crochet also.

My city councilperson held a Melt The ICE webinar last night--I knitted almost half a hat while watching it!

I moved a few months ago, and a couple weeks ago I put notes in the mailboxes/mailslots of a bunch of my neighbors to start getting to know people. I have now been added to the neighborhood email list and had 2 face-to-face hangouts and have prompted at least one household to plan neighborhood drop-in open houses so that we can start to get to know each other face-to-face. (I know a big piece of what has come out of Minnesota is the exhortation to build those hyperlocal community connections.)

I wrote more about it on my DW here: https://hermionesviolin.dreamwidth.org/1782917.html
