Post from a friend who writes better than I do-

This is HARMFUL misinformation which is having a real impact, wasting a limited resource intended for a minority community, one that is also PROVIDED by members of that same community. When desperate Americans call, they are inadvertently harming Canadian trans people on both sides of the line.

At best, whoever made this graphic was woefully ignorant, but I suspect this may be strategic propaganda. But you know what? The intent doesn't matter; it's the outcomes that matter. Let this source of bad outcomes stop with you! Do not spread the wrong info, and correct it when you see it!

Corrections rarely get as much traction as the original misinfo, and I don't have much reach, so PLEASE feel free to share my dippy graphic (or make a better one). *They had made a graphic which I have not included*

Also, I know we all have limited mental energy right now, but you have GOT to fact check memes before you share them! I'm so sorry to say this, as good fact checking is difficult, and it's so much easier to just read and share. However, this is the kind of harm we enable every time we don't do our due diligence.

In the words of Shel Silverstein, some kinds of help are the kinds of help we all can do without. One relatively simple way to be Mr. Rogers helpers instead of Shel Silverstein "helpers" is to stand in the way of bad information - make sure it's really real before you pass it on, and if you aren't sure or don't have time to fully confirm the information, just don't post it!!!

I've been calling my US senators and representative, and realized that I shouldn't ignore my state-level folks either. Obviously, they can't change federal anything, but I can ask them to make state policies/laws/guidelines that will help mitigate the awful of (insert whichever federal issue here).

I started by calling my state rep, and got an actual person, who seemed rather surprised to get a constituent call (?), recommending that I email the representative so she could see my concerns directly. OK, then.
(Not sure who yours are? This site will tell you if you put in your mailing address.)

I saw via a Mastodon link that Republicans in Congress are trying to stop the federal government for paying for any gender-affirming health care. The person who posted about this urged people to write to our representatives, but I didn't see a link or suggested text.

So, I used my congresswoman and senators' web sites to write to them. This could probably be better written, but I think it's good enough. Slightly different phrasing for the House and the Senate. What I sent my senators is:

Republicans, led by Marjorie Taylor Greene in the House, are trying to insert sweeping anti-trans language into must-pass funding bills. They want to stop the federal government from paying for any gender-affirming care. These anti-trans provisions are already in the House versions of the Health and Human Services and military appropriations bills.

This law would have a horrible effect on transgender people. People die by suicide when they can't get the care they need.

I suspect that's not a bug for them, but a feature--they literally want my friends dead. Please work to block this in the Senate.

What I sent Rep. Pressley is:

Republicans including Marjorie Taylor Greene are trying to insert sweeping anti-trans language into must-pass funding bills. They want to stop the federal government from paying for any gender-affirming care. These anti-trans provisions are already in the House versions of the Health and Human Services and military appropriations bills.

Depending on whose district you're in, it might or might not be a good idea to emphasize that the cruelty is part of the point.

Florida Senate Bill 254 would make it a crime to provide sex confirmation treatment of any sort to people under the age of 18, and provide a legal framework to take trans kids away from their parents, and to take all kids away from trans parents.

It appears that Equality Florida is covering the bill, and has taken action for trans rights in the past.

If you live in Washington state, there is a transphobic bill that is currently in committee. It's HB 1214, the "Protecting Children's Bodies" act. Currently, it has only one sponsor, Representative Jim Walsh (as the man's constituent, I'm not surprised).

HB 1214 would ban any gender-affirming care for minors (under 18) in WA, and prevent mental health and medical providers from referring minors to care. It would immediately de-transition anyone under 18 in WA who is currently receiving care, and would outlaw any care going forward, making it a class C felony (punishable by 5 years in prison and/or $10,000 in fines) to provide or refer minors to gender-affirming care.

Representative Marcus Ricelli (a Democrat) is the chair of the Health Care & Wellness committee, where the bill currently is. If you are a Washington resident, you can email him through this tool asking him to kill the bill in committee. If you do not live in Ricelli's district, it will ask you if you're sure you want to email him, and you can say "yes" and it will send it anyway. You can also email Jim Walsh (the bill's sponsor) about it, but I doubt it would make a difference for him. (I did because he's my representative.) You can also email your own state representative, and ask them to vote against the bill if it gets out of committee.

Here's what I emailed them both:

[true story of a young person I know who attempted suicide multiple times while trying to pretend to be cis as a teenager, and is much happier now he is out as trans]

The suicide rate among transgender children who try to stay in the closet and live according to their birth sex is astronomically high. It drops to normal when they are allowed to transition socially and/or medically.

Medical care for transgender children includes nothing irrevocable such as surgery. It consists of using their name and pronouns, and allowing them to use puberty blockers to defer the onset of puberty. It is lifesaving care because it reduces the risk of suicide.

Preventing such care will not protect children's bodies. It will put them at risk by forcing them to conform to what Jim Walsh thinks they should be.

Please kill this bill by keeping it in committee.

As you may be aware, authorities in Texas are investigating (and intending to prosecute) parents of transgender children for possible child abuse for providing them with gender-affirming care.

This is a good twitter thread on the latest developments from the Houston Bureau Chief for the New York Times.

The thread includes a link to the ACLU's suit against Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas department of family services, where you can donate — https://www.aclu.org/legal-document/doe-v-abbott-petition

It's been a while since our last check in. I've been traveling, with limited internet access, so I'm not sure I've caught up on everything that happened while I was offline. But enough to know that Trump, Pence and their minions continue to be despicable.

Thanks to everyone who's been posting action items and links! Here's a reminder of what's been happening in the comm since our last check in:

From Protect Trans Health, a collaboration between the National Center for Transgender Equity and the Transgender Law Center:
The Trump-Pence Administration is trying to undermine the Health Care Rights Law, a lifesaving law that helps transgender people access the health care they need without discrimination from health care providers or insurers. Now, the Department if Health and Human Services is proposing regulation that falsely says discrimination against transgender people is legal.

While they can’t change the law, this new regulation would confuse patients, providers, and insurers, and make it much harder for many transgender people to access life-saving care.

It's been a rough week. The election is coming up and early voting has started in many states. This is the time to do your ballot research for the down-ballot races. Ballotepedia can help, and also local papers (if you still have them and they are trustworthy) can at least shed light on propositions and things like that. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Upcoming Elections - New

Reminder that we now have a Friending Meme and a (locked) post where you can connect with others with live in the same area. We hope you find both of these posts useful!

We also have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru. Both [personal profile] tanaqui and I are very grateful for the help.
