It's National Voter Registration Day! To honor the day, here are a grab-bag of links to sites where you can check your voter registration and/or register to vote:

Change.TurboVote.org

Common Cause

Healthcare Voter

National Voter Registration Day

I Will Vote

Human Rights Campaign

And, yes, I know these all pretty much do the same thing, but this way if one site is down, or if you want to give traffic to a particular organization, or if you're working a voter registration drive with a specific theme or group attached, you can pick the one or ones that work best for your needs. (Mods, do we need a "2024 election" tag?)

I thought this might be relevant to some of our interests in the wake of today's news: link to donate to VP Harris' presidential campaign.

ETA thanks to folks in comments: [personal profile] minoanmiss also recommends contacting the DNC to encourage them to make her the official nominee, and [personal profile] philomytha let us know that US citizens who are overseas can contribute through the linked site if they give their passport number. Thanks so much!

Further ETA from comments: quoting our wonderful mod [personal profile] tanaqui: "If you have time rather than money to donate, take a look at https://events.democrats.org/

If you click on the filter button near the top of the page, you can search for events that are local, GOTV, canvassing/phonebanking or ADA accessible."

And [personal profile] minoanmiss would like to credit [personal profile] petra for the idea of contacting the DNC. (This is probably my last update to this post, so that newer ideas can go in new posts and more people can see them.)

TurboVote is something of a one-stop resource for election information: on the page I've linked ,you can sign up for election reminders and also get help with registering to vote. (I've been meaning to make a post about this for a while but I put it off until I'd had a chance to see for myself if the reminders worked--- and they do; I got one for the primary in my state.)

This is election day in much of the United States. It's an "off year," but there are some significant things on people's ballots: if you can vote and haven't already done so, please do.This is an off year, but there are some significant elections. In particular:

Both houses of the Virginia legislature. Not every district is competitive (gerrymandering again) but if yours might be, please vote for the Democratic candidate.

Ohio: "Issue 1" would protect abortion rights, by amending the state constitution.

There are also more local elections like city council races and school boards on the ballot in some places. If you're in Boston, there are eight candidates for four at-large seats. I voted happily for Louijeune, Santana, and Mejia, and less happily for Murphy. Pleave vote against the two anti-vaxxers, Vitale and Nelson. Vitale is also an insurrectionist and election denier, which aren't Boston-local issues but are enough to make me vote against her for anything she runs for.

Minneapolis and St. Paul, I recommend Naomi Kritzer's election blogging. She has posted a round=up of all of this year's endorsements, with links to her explanations: https://naomikritzer.com/2023/11/05/election-2023-sample-ballot-index-of-posts/

This post is for talking about anything and everything to do with election day and the results.

Tell us about your voting experience if you're voting today,

Tell us if you're doing something today to get out the vote or safeguard voting rights, if you're working for a campaign, or if you're making sure the elections run smoothly. (A big thank you to all of you who are poll workers.)

Tell us about how you'll be following the results, about the races you're excited about and any news about results you want to share (whether you're looking for the community to celebrate or commiserate).

If it proves necessary, tell us about any urgent actions we need to take (or make a brand new post about them!)

And let's keep each other company while we wait for the results and see how things will shake out for the next two years,

Since my post with the links list was well-received and since our excellent mod [personal profile] tanaqui said that the candidate slates seemed especially helpful,
I decided to do another round of them. (Again, cut to spare your reading page.) (Also, I'm operating on the assumption that these are helpful not just in the "where do I send my money" kind of way, but in finding out about candidates who might be running in your area or that of people you know, and you can signal-boost or do other things for them as well.)

The list.... )

This is by no means an exhaustive or heavily researched list; rather, it’s an assortment of 2022 election-related links I’ve come across in my travels that I thought might be of interest to people here. (I’ve made the choice to leave the links visible rather than doing the “cover link with text” thing so that you can see where you’re going.)Cut to spare your reading page. )

All are welcome, and you can take the 95 bus from the Red Line to get there. For the ones at City Hall, you can also take the 96. I've attended elections inspector and clerk trainings held by Sandy, she's very thorough.

Let people know:

If you've requested a ballot but haven’t received it, you can vote in person! Tell the person at the check-in table that you wish to cancel your requested mail ballot and vote in person instead.

Start demanding they get the GSA to sign the letter of ascertainment to let the transition process start!

Looking for sources of talking points and/or people to cite?

Here's a letter from FEC Commissioner Ellen Weintraub explaining clearly and bluntly why it's necessary and why there's no basis for delaying it when there was no such delay in 2008 or 2016:

https://twitter.com/EllenLWeintraub/status/1326275176791683072

Former Secretaries of the DHS -- both Republican and Democrat -- explain why the process needs to start now:

https://twitter.com/rgoodlaw/status/1326551714153943040

150 former security officials (R and D) warn that the delay poses a “serious risk to national security":

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/11/12/security-officials-warn-biden-transition-436286

Mike Rodgers (R, former chair of the House Intelligence Committee) demands that Biden start receiving the President's Daily Brief immediately:

https://twitter.com/RepMikeRogers/status/1326260225301753858

You can also see if your Republican reps have acknowledged Biden as President-Elect (round-up of those who have) -- ask them to do so if they haven't, but also praise them if they have.

It's a painfully low bar and it might seem galling to have to praise them for stepping over it when it's on the floor, but positive reinforcement is REALLY POWERFUL, especially when they'll be getting a tonne of blow-back from Trumpists.

Like the title says, we have two upcoming opportunities to flip the Senate (okay, it'll be 50/50, but with Vice President Harris as the tiebreaking vote) in the same state!

Here are the links to the Democratic candidates' campaign sites:

https://electjon.com/ for Jon Ossoff, who ran in Georgia's 6th Congressional district in a special election back 2017, and who is running against Republican David Perdue

and

https://warnockforgeorgia.com/ for the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who got a very early endorsement from none other than former gubernatorial candidate and current voting protection activist (and also our fellow fannish person and a published romance writer) Stacey Abrams and is running against Republican Kelly Loeffler, who was appointed following the resignation of incumbent Johnny Isakson and who is not only married to the president of the New York Stock Exchange (this is the sort of thing that might matter to some subset of swingable Southern voters, as in OMG damnyankee) but appears to have engaged in a spot of insider trading around the whole COVID thing.

Speaking of Stacey Abrams, here the website for her main voting protection organization: https://fairfight.com/; I note that there are links to volunteer both in Georgia and nationally as well as to donate.

The election has finally been called for Biden and Harris, so it's time to celebrate!

The work isn't over, of course: Cheetolini is refusing to concede and who knows what his supporters will do in the next few days. There are also the two run-off races in Georgia that will determine control of the Senate, so plenty of work to be done there. Not to mention all the work that still needs to go on to roll back the damage done in the last four years and build a fairer world, to improve voting rights and turnout, and to take control at local and state level.

But at this moment, we definitely deserve a post for celebrating. :-) Both the result (and that we've seen the first woman and first woman of color elected to the White House!) and the way this community has become an amazing place over the past four years. Thank you to all of you!

In some states, people whose absentee ballots have been rejected because of flaws have the chance to correct them -- 5pm today for Florida, by Friday in Georgia, by the 12th in NC and Nevada.
