A friend let me know about a new Bureau of Prisons guideline for treatment of inmates with gender dysphoria, which you can read in its entirety here. The short form is that they're denying trans inmates gender-affirming care despite medical consensus, and substituting conversion therapy, which has been proven to be harmful and does not in any way "cure" gender dysphoria.
Dear [Representative]:
I am a constituent from [place], and I deeply concerned about the new Bureau of Prisons policies for treating patients with gender dysphoria, which mandate conversion therapy, a practice the American Psychiatric Association, among other professional bodies, has researched and rejected. The Trump Administration wants to treat gender dysphoria as something that can be cured by talk therapy, whereas the American Psychiatric Association is very clear: "APA opposes the practice of 'reparative' or conversion therapies that are based on the a priori assumption that diverse sexual orientations and gender identities are mental illnesses. APA encourages psychotherapies which affirm individuals’ sexual orientation and gender identities."
Denying transgender inmates the gender-affirming care that the mental health authorities recognize as necessary is cruel and unusual punishment. You must speak out against this Bureau of Prisons torture, and against all other moves by this administration to deny medical care to inmates, regardless of those inmates' needs or their immigration status.
Sincerely,
