Now that the 2021 legislative sessions have begun in most states, state lawmakers have already introduced hundreds of bills aimed at election procedures and voter access. Some of them are good and will make it easier for people to vote; some of them are bad and will make voting harder or will disenfranchise people.

The Brennan Center has done a round-up of all the new bills so you can check out what's going on in your state and contact your state reps to encourage them to either oppose or support the bills they'll be voting on.

Like the title says, we have two upcoming opportunities to flip the Senate (okay, it'll be 50/50, but with Vice President Harris as the tiebreaking vote) in the same state!

Here are the links to the Democratic candidates' campaign sites:

https://electjon.com/ for Jon Ossoff, who ran in Georgia's 6th Congressional district in a special election back 2017, and who is running against Republican David Perdue

and

https://warnockforgeorgia.com/ for the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who got a very early endorsement from none other than former gubernatorial candidate and current voting protection activist (and also our fellow fannish person and a published romance writer) Stacey Abrams and is running against Republican Kelly Loeffler, who was appointed following the resignation of incumbent Johnny Isakson and who is not only married to the president of the New York Stock Exchange (this is the sort of thing that might matter to some subset of swingable Southern voters, as in OMG damnyankee) but appears to have engaged in a spot of insider trading around the whole COVID thing.

Speaking of Stacey Abrams, here the website for her main voting protection organization: https://fairfight.com/; I note that there are links to volunteer both in Georgia and nationally as well as to donate.

Don't forget that tomorrow is the primary election in Massachusetts!

The Democratic side features a hotly-contested Senate seat; middle-aged progressive Ed Markey versus young moderate Joe Kennedy. Here in Medford there's a contest for State Rep between stodgy but kind looooong-time incumbent Paul Donato and progressive idealist Nichole Mossalam. And some others worth researching.

Any Massachusetts resident old enough can observe a polling place for at least half an hour; I can provide information regarding what to look for.

I was supposed to be working for the City of Medford at Ward 8, Precinct 2 tomorrow, but I woke up with the sort of sore throat that's a cold symptom (Edit: now gone again), so I cannot in good conscience do so. I'll call my precinct clerk in a couple of hours so he can get a substitute via the City Clerk's office. This substitute may be a first-timer, and the clerk is a third-timer, and it's easy to forget to check the manual (the link goes to an only-slightly-out-of-date example). So if you can come observe at the fire station at Zero Medford Street, I'd be particularly grateful.

The first one has a filled-in form for contacting your representatives; it was easily adapted to contact them about the other two as well. Thanks to [personal profile] fresne for bringing these to my attention.

AB 2054, the Community Response Initiative to Strengthen Emergency Systems (CRISES) Act, arranges funds for grants awarded to community-based organizations that replace duties, such as mental health crisis response, that are usually taken on by police. Act here: https://allianceforbmoc.org/crises-act.

ACA5, which basically re-legalizes affirmative action in CA. The language of the bill itself sounds kind of scary --you want me to do WHAT to discrimination protection??-- but it's essentially a repeal of Prop 209, which made affirmative action illegal in publicly funded institutions. The CA NAACP is asking Californians to contact their reps in support. Act here: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/endorse-aca-5?fbclid=IwAR3oVGV6nrdjSDPuMcZYbMg3XVjl2-aH2TNdFzmVbVb_gtKqv9FN-oDA6Mo

ACA6, which would restore voting rights to individuals on parole, essentially means that someone just out of prison could immediately vote again. Yay voting rights. Email your reps for this one!

Note: "ACA" means it's a CA state constitution amendment, so you should definitely contact both your state senators and your assemblymembers, while support for AB 2054 should go only to your assemblymember.

Since the last check-in, we're down to three candidates in the Democratic primaries. Cheetolini has fired yet another Chief of Staff. And the federal response to COVID-19 is (to no-one's great surprise) a mess. I hope you're all keeping safe!

There are more primaries coming up, and we've had some great resources and inspiration posted in the comm for those still to vote:

US Primaries Are In Full Swing (resources for finding information about your elections locally)
"Super Tuesday" Primaries (Information on "Our Vote" -- help for people facing issues voting)
Thank You For Voting Yesterday! (Information about primaries for statewide offices and Congressional seats in MA)

It's been quiet otherwise since the last check-in, but I'm sure you've all been busy with good things in real life. Let us know what you've been up to in the last week or are planning to get involved in next week.

As seems to be the case on three-day weekends for me, the check-in post is a day late. Apologies for that. It's been a rollercoaster of a week with the Democrats taking the House and a lot of down-ballot races and the firing of Attorney General Sessions imperiling the Mueller investigation. It's a good reminder that we still have two more years under this regime and we're still going to have to fight every step of the way.

Thank you to everyone who voted in the election. Thank you to everyone who contributed in big ways and small to campaigns across the country. Thank you to all our overseas friends who've supported us throughout with information and encouragement. Never give up, never surrender.

Democrats Need Voters’ Help To Fix Gerrymandering. Will They Get It? (Talking Points Memo, Sep 2018)
At a time when public confidence in the integrity of American elections appears to be slipping — no doubt aided by the president’s lies claiming rampant voter fraud — the efforts among progressives to prioritize voting rights marks a shift for an issue that had long been left largely to lawyers and courtrooms. With Trump as president and the next redistricting process looming large, a slew of new and old organizations is scrambling to figure out how and if they can make wonky, procedural voting issues ones that excite and motivate turnout.

The Cause the Resistance Cares Most About Is Ending Voter Suppression (Vice, Feb 2018)
In our survey, we asked the political influencers we surveyed which three of nearly a dozen issues they would choose as their top priorities. We included two voting reforms: automatic voter registration (in which individuals are registered to vote when interacting with government agencies like the DMV) and restoring the portion of the Voting Rights Act recently struck down by the Supreme Court (by creating a new pre-clearance formula). Single-payer health care (44 percent), automatic voter registration (41 percent), and restoring the Voting Rights Act (36 percent) were the top priorities. In other words, two of the three top priorities among political influencers were related to restoring and strengthening voting rights.

Do you know anyone who might know anyone in North Dakota, etc.?

Summary courtesy of [personal profile] recessional:

Big messy ugly shit is going on but the tl;dr is that currently a way has been found to disenfranchise basically all on-reservation voters in North Dakota, because PO Box addresses are no longer accepted (and quite a LOT of residents of the reservations don't HAVE street addresses as yet). BUT. It turns out there may be a way to get the needed street address that is no-charge and while the whole thing is Kafkaesque IT'S STILL IMPORTANT.

So.

If you think you know anybody in North Dakota who might be able to help this info get where it needs to go (or know someone who might know someone, or so on) PLEASE PASS IT AROUND.

Note from me: this is also a particular attack on a seat with a very vulnerable incumbent Democratic senator, Heidi Heitkamp, who (as you may recall) recently voted "no" on Kavanaugh despite the potential political cost for her.

A senior HuffPo reporter says: Democrats believe this law, which disproportionately impacts Native Americans, was explicitly passed in reaction to Heitkamp’s upset win in 2012.

Kavanaugh was, to no one's great surprise, confirmed to the Supreme Court yesterday. We're already seeing responses and actions to move forward, like this fundraiser to honor Dr Blasey, particularly in her professional capacity. But the focus is now switching back to the mid-term elections and taking back as much control as possible in Congress.

We've also been swapping advice on how to look after yourself when protesting, in case the Big Orange Baby throws another tantrum and threatens Mueller and Rosenstein again.

So what else has been going on in the comm?

Via the SPLC newsletter:

It'll be on the ballot in Florida in November (Amendment 4); it restores the right to vote to people with former felony convictions (specifically excluding murder and felony sexual offences) who have fully completed their sentences, including probabtion and parole.

That's nearly 1.4 million people, potentially.

They're looking for volunteers, including people (from anywhere, though I'm guessing that means in the US) who can phone bank, and even remote texting, which could be a viable option for those who can't do phones:
