The shutdown continues. Please keep contacting your representatives. If they're Democrats, thank them for standing firm against the blackmail from the White House. If they're Republicans, urge them to join colleagues like Thom Tills, Cory Gardner and Susan Collins (all up for re-election in 2020) who seem willing to find a way to end the shutdown.

Among the many other ongoing issues, there are teachers' strikes in LA and other places (some unofficially) and we have actions to support those workers. (Thanks [personal profile] toastykitten!) And fannishly, [community profile] fandomtrumpshate creator sign ups are open until 1 Feb.

But there has been some good news coming from a new (state) legislature! [personal profile] redbird let is know that the NY Legislature has passed electoral law reforms.

The Cheeto is getting airtime on all the major networks today for an Oval Office address on immigration. We all know how truthful that's going to be.

The Democrats led by Pelosi and Schumer are demanding equal air time to rebut him. (Joint statement)

So far only NBC News has agreed. (Vox story)

A group of Democratic Senators are pushing to oppose any new votes until the government reopens. They need us to pressure ALL Senators into participating, both Dems and Republicans.

Indivisible has a call script here, which I've included below. You can also contact them via Resistbot.

Tell your Senators to oppose all legislation in the Senate until the government is re-opened. The new Democratic House passed funding bills on January 3 that would keep the Department of Homeland Security open through February, and the rest of the government open through September. Now, the Senate must act to pass these funding bills and end the Trump Shutdown—before they pretend it’s business as usual and move on to other things in the Senate. Call your Senators and tell them: no votes on other legislation until the government gets reopened.
Call Script for Democratic and Republican Senators

Caller: Hello! My name is ___ and I’m calling from (part of state). I’m calling to ask [Senator ___] to oppose any legislation in the Senate until the government is re-opened.
If the Senator disagrees

Staffer: Nice to talk to you. Unfortunately, [Senator] disagrees. Re-opening the government is a top priority for the Senator, but the Senate has other obligations too.

Caller: That’s unacceptable. There are 800,000 federal workers going without pay. National parks are filling up with trash. The Senate—including [Senator]—unanimously passed a clean budget that would keep the government open until February. [Senator] needs to force Mitch McConnell to put legislation re-opening the government on the floor by opposing all other legislation.

Staffer: Thanks, I’ll pass along your comments to [Senator].

Caller: Please do, and please take down my name and contact information so you can let me know what [Senator] decides to do. This vote is very important to me.
If the Senator agrees

Staffer: Thanks for calling. The Senator agrees with you. This isn’t business as usual—we have an obligation to get the government re-opened.

Caller: That’s great. Please pass along my thanks to the Senator. Have a great day.

A Happy New Year to all our members and a big welcome to the new Congress!

The shutdown continues -- sympathies to all who are affected -- and Cheetolini continues with his tantrum, but there are signs that Republican Senators who are up for re-election in 2020 are vulnerable to pressure to pass bills coming from the House that don't include money for the Wall. (Thom Tillis (NC) has joined Cory Gardner (CO) and Susan Collins (ME) in calling for an end to the shutdown.) So keep up those calls if you can!

We still have plenty of other ongoing actions. Fannishly, creator sign-ups for Fandom Trumps Hate open today and just before Christmas [personal profile] rydra_wong called for us to "Support your local muckrakers". Plus:

Sooo. The government is shut down. For those that want details here's the Vox article: https://www.vox.com/2018/12/22/18141081/government-partial-shutdown-trump-house-senate

ETA: It is a partial government shutdown in that many services and agencies including the Department of Defense are still open since they were forward funded. Additional information about what's open and what's closed is here:
https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/12/20/18136667/partial-government-shutdown-post-office-military-passports
Info on DOD: https://news.usni.org/2018/09/28/36944 and the 2019 forward funding bill for DOD, HHS, DOEd https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/6157/all-info

The Senate is reconvening this weekend and negotiations are on-going. ETA: Now they have gone home till next Thursday, Dec 27.

This is the time to call/text/fax your Senators and Representatives to express your displeasure.

You can find scripts at 5calls.org.

On a personal note, my husband is a federal employee and I'm a federal contractor. His agency has a few days grace before he's furloughed, and I'm allowed to telework as long as nothing I do requires access to my worksite, my federal supervisor, or email (*looks at vanishingly small list of projects that applies to*). In addition to disrupting projects and wasting hours and hours untangling what to do, who's considered important enough to work, and all the thousands of details it takes to manage one of the largest workforces in the country, we also aren't getting paid for the duration. Even people who have permission to work are likely not getting paid till this is over. While federal employees will probably get backpay, it's a different story for contractors, which basically varies by contract, and is likely not going to happen immediately because bureaucracy. After the 2013 shutdown I had colleagues who waited 2 YEARS to get paid. And hourly workers like janitorial and cafeteria staff are likely screwed out payment altogether for those furloughed hours. As for services, while many of the most essential will continue to be run, for all the rest they will build up another nightmare backlog that will take months to catch up with. You the thought bureaucracy was bad before....

Happy holidays everyone.

A government shutdown will begin at midnight. The Senate has recessed until 12:01 a.m. without passing a spending bill. (Washington Post)

BREAKING NEWS: A government shutdown will begin at midnight. The Senate has recessed until 12:01 a.m. without passing a spending bill.

The Senate planned to vote early Friday morning on a spending bill that would pour billions of dollars into the military and domestic programs while keeping the government operating.

The fate of the bill was uncertain in the House, where conservatives balked at adding billions to the nation’s debt and liberals demanded action on protecting young undocumented immigrants from deportation.

The House leadership had advised lawmakers to “prepare for late night or early morning votes.”

White House Office of Management and Budget spokesman John Czwartacki said late Thursday that “agencies are now being urged to review and prepare for a lapse” in spending after midnight.

This is the second shutdown in three weeks.

Well done, Congress. Well done. /sarcasm

For those following at home, I'm a govt contractor and I'm supposed to go in tomorrow to find out what I'm supposed to do.

ETA: Aand open again as of 5:30 am Friday

Congress has kept the government open (Vox)
After much drama and a brief but technical government shutdown, Congress voted to fund the government at roughly 5:30 am Friday — keeping federal agencies open until the end of March. Lawmakers extended government funding through March 23 in addition to passing a massive deal to increase investments in domestic programs and the military by roughly $300 billion over the next two years, and they increased the debt ceiling for one year. The bill passed at 71-28 in the Senate and 240-186 in the House with bipartisan support.

New York Times: Government Shuts Down as Bill to Extend Funding Is Blocked; Senators Continue to Seek Deal

• Senate Democrats on Friday night blocked passage of a monthlong stopgap spending bill, leaving less than two hours to find a path forward before much of the government was set to shut down.

• The roll call, which is still technically open, was 50 in favor and 48 against. Sixty votes are needed to end debate and move to a final vote. Five Democrats voted to end debate, while four Republicans voted with most of the Democrats to block the bill. See how the senators voted »

• After it became clear that the bill lacked the votes need to move forward, senators remained on the chamber’s floor, apparently discussing whether some compromise could be reached.

• Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, was trying to rally support for a shorter three-week spending bill which could muster the 60 votes for passage. But because the bill would need to clear the House, at least a short shutdown appeared unavoidable.

We'll see if they get something passed by Monday. The weekend gives a little breathing room.
