[personal profile] satsuma left a comment on our sticky post flagging up S.2767 - SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act.

This legislation would change the amount an individual on SSI can save from $2,000 to $10,000, and the amount a family can save from $3,000 to $20,000. It would also adjust the limit for inflation in the future and exclude retirement savings.

This would ensure people on SSI aren't always teetering on the edge of disaster if they have just one unexpected expense, such as needing a repair to their assistive technology or needing to move home, as well as helping family members move into work or accept better jobs (or marry their long-term partners!) without risking the loss SSI benefits in the family.

There's more information in this article.

There is a proposal to change federal regulations so that getting help with groceries or food does not lead to benefits cuts. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/ssi-in-kind-support-maintenance_n_63ebf926e4b022eb3e32f2d6?jil

There is a mandatory public comment period and they need positive comments from US people on why this is a good idea. Note: your name will be attached to the public comment.

The deadline for comments is April 17

My comment was about not having to calculate the value of soup I took to a grieving friend, and the importance of shared meals as part of community.

Tens of millions of Americans are eligible to get $50/month from the US government to help pay for their Internet service for the next few months. Eligibility for the "Emergency Broadband Benefit" includes people with low incomes, anyone who lost a job or significant income during the pandemic, people who are getting other benefits including food stamps, Medicaid, and Supplemental Security Income, and anyone who is already getting subsidized or low-income Internet service.

The FCC estimates that the application process should take about ten minutes, but you do have to apply. You can start at https://getemergencybroadband.org/how-to-apply/

(Cross-posting from my own journal, I think this falls under self-care for some of us, and is information worth passing around.)

The proposed rule change would increase the frequency of "reviews" of Social Security disability benefits--i.e., take away people's benefits. If you can submit a public comment, they're required to consider each individual comment; they may not care, but those comments could be useful when a lawsuit is filed to block the damn thing. The public comment period ends on Friday, January 31.

ProgressAmerica has a "take action" link, with suggested wording. is here: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/act-now-protect-social-security-oppose-the-trump-administrations-cruel-policy
As always, for public comments it's important to at least rephrase the suggested wording, whether or not you add anything. (I made mine personal, talking about someone I know who this might harm.)

Formally, this is Docket No. SSA-2018-0026; Rules Regarding the Frequency and Notice of Continuing Disability Reviews

In response to the recent UK election, [personal profile] kaberett made a post about some places they're finding hope, followed by links for possible activism, including organizations they consider worth donating to. [personal profile] kaberett writes "In the first instance, I'm wanting to funnel my resources toward groups already under attack. Here's a starting point from me":

The Trump administration wants to cut SNAP benefits to low-income women without children.

We can post opposing comments here: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/02/23/2018-03752/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-requirements-and-services-for-able-bodied-adults-without#open-comment

It's best to write your own comment, but if you want talking points, feel free to paraphrase what I'm sending:

"I strongly oppose the proposed regulation change. ALL Americans should have enough to eat, including adults who don't have children, or whose children are grown.

"The SNAP program helps my neighbors, some of whom are working but still cannot afford enough to eat, because of low wages or high rents. The United States is a rich country, and no Americans should go to bed hungry at night."

(I heard about this through UltraViolet.)
