Summary of the OFA Volunteer Call
Jan. 11th, 2018 10:51 amThis is a summary of Organizing for Action's volunteer call from this past Monday. There was video, but just one talking head, so if you're interested in future calls they do have a telephone option.
Thank you so much for joining our very first monthly volunteer call of 2018! We are excited to do amazing work together this year while keeping in mind the OFA vision for 2018: working towards a more participatory and accessible democracy. We hope that you will continue the great work you are doing by building relationships, doing local work in your communities and plugging in new volunteers to our new campaigns!
We know that as volunteers on the ground you have great power to build and create a path to a more participatory and accessible democracy. The relationships you are building in your communities are important and essential to progressive change and will affect organizing structures in 2018, 2020 and beyond!
Here is a little bit more about our new campaigns for 2018: Rubber stamp reps, Fair democracy, and continuing to support the progressive agenda!
RUBBER STAMP REPS
#RubberStamp
The majority of constituents in these districts voted against this administration's platform, but their representatives are acting as rubber stamps for the White House's extreme agenda, rather than working for the people they represent. We deserve better. Join the team that's holding these representatives accountable! Having conversations about the issues we care about with constituents in these districts now will lay groundwork for 2018 for volunteers to gain organizing skills that will be essential, like canvassing, phone banking and having effective conversations. https://www.ofa.us/rubber-stamp-reps/
FAIR DEMOCRACY
#OFAction
OFA believes in a fair democracy for everyone. Civic engagement is a personal responsibility, but it is also a national obligation for our country to ensure full participation and access to our democracy to everyone. We have launched our voter registration efforts as well as our partnership with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) to help increase civic engagement, particularly those communities adversely affected by low voter turnout and high barriers to participation.
Monday, January 15, 2018 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day -- a federal holiday marking the Reverend’s birthday. It is a perfect chance for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through acts of service and community building. OFA is encouraging volunteers to use the long holiday weekend as an opportunity to bring their communities closer together with service projects and/or outreach events focused on voter registration. Share your event on Action Network -- the lock date to post your event is Monday, January 8. For more information on the MLK Day of Service or more details on how to register folks to vote through vote.org, click here.
In 2018, we will need to be educating our communities about the impacts of gerrymandering, so we will be hosting a “Train-the-trainer” webinar on January 18 to give you the tools to do just that.
DACA/DREAM ACT
#OFAction, #HeretoStay, #DREAMActNow
Since a continuing resolution was passed before Christmas, the new deadline for the government spending bill is January 19. While Congressional leaders try to hammer out a deal, we need to keep up the pressure to hold the line on passing a clean DREAM Act as part of the spending bill package.
Since this administration ended DACA, more than 14,500 young immigrants have already lost their protections, and we cannot wait any longer to protect these young people who have only ever known this country as home.
In the lead up to the funding deadline, the coalition is hosting a national call in on Wednesday, January 10. Please share the House and Senate call tool links as widely as you can.
