The clown show to elect a Speaker in the new Congress has been quite something, hasn't it? Let's hope the Republicans continue with the disarray and infighting (although not so much disarray they hold up critical items related to the budget and debt ceiling).

We haven't had any posts in the comm since the last check in, so here's the usual reminder to not be shy of making your own posts about any issues and actions you think the comm should know about. You can also drop some information into a comment on our sticky post if you'd like the mods to make the post.

If you're looking for information on anything else, you can use our tags to check for any ongoing actions or resources relevant to the issues you care about. (And a quick shout out to [personal profile] redbird for all the tagging work that keeps the comm running smoothly.)

Finally, here's our poll (behind the cut) for you to tell us what you've been doing in the last few weeks. And do let us know in comments what you plan to do next.

This is the last check-in post before election day!

What are your plans for Tuesday? Have you already voted (in person or by mail) or are you planning to vote on the day? Will you be working on GOTV efforts or at the polls or on a campaign? Will you be following the results avidly or having an early night?

Please let us know of any last minute actions people can take and feel free to talk about races or ballot initiatives/ propositions you're particularly interested in.

If you didn't see it, or need a reminder, take a look at last month's check in post, which linked to four posts made by [personal profile] sathari with lots of great links for this election cycle.

And I want to highlight 866-OUR-VOTE, which offers on-the-day support to people having trouble voting, as well as lots of resources and links — in multiple languages.

I'll put up a post on Tuesday for people to talk about the events of the day and the results. Meanwhile, here's this week's poll.

I'd like to start by saying I hope everyone in the path of the various hurricanes and other bad weather is safe and well.

Here in the comm, we've had a series of great posts on the upcoming elections since the last check in. A big thank you to [personal profile] sathari for finding and sharing all these useful resources!

I hope everyone is having a good Labor Day weekend. Efforts for the next set of elections will now kick into high gear, so please do post about any specific races you're following, campaigns and initiatives people may want to donate to (if they have the funds) and any actions people can take, especially if they can be done remotely (text and phonebanking or sending postcards, for example).

Of course, you can still post about absolutely anything else you think our members would find useful! Please don't be shy of making a post yourself — but you can also drop some information into a comment to our sticky post if you'd like the mods to do it.

Good news from Kansas on abortion rights. (Bad news from Indiana — boo.) Good news that the "Inflation Reduction Act" (which also has measures to mitigate climate change) is likely to move forwards. And Alex Jones not only has to pay significant damages to some of the Sandy Hook parents (in the first of a number of cases) but, thanks to his lawyers screwing up, his phone records are likely to end up in the hands of the January 6 committee. That's more good news than we often get, so let's not forget to celebrate the wins, even as we work to prevent the losses.

Here are the posts we've had in the comm since the last check in.

S.2992 (American Innovation and Choice Online Act)

It's been a rough couple of weeks, with multiple terrible decisions coming out of the Supreme Court.

If you're looking for information specifically on Roe vs Wade, this Google Doc has advice on What You Can Do.

And I saw a good reminder on my reading list that to tackle one of the fundamental issues of why we're in this bad place, we should work on voting activism — making sure elections result in local officials such as sheriffs and district attorneys who won't enforce terrible state laws, along with state-level politicians who won't enact them, as well as getting control at the federal level. We have a post with election resources that you may find useful.

Here are the posts we've had in the comm since the last check in.

Hi all. A few weeks ago I got an email from Combined Jewish Philanthropies pointing to the Mapping Project. It seems to be advertised by a lot of people who - like me - are against the unequal treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank.

However, it is absolutely indiscriminate. Yes, there are Jewish organizations in Boston that support Israel unquestioningly and do not hold the government accountable. There are plenty of organizations and individuals that do hold the government responsible and work as hard on that as they do on, say, signing petitions to support Indigenous Americans.

The link to the Mapping Project showed up again in a SURJ (Standing Up for Racial Justice) email and I wanted to cry. I wrote back:

I am very sad to see that you are supporting the Mapping Project. There are better ways to get Israel out of Palestine than to lump schoolchildren and unions in with organizations actively working to harm Palestinians.

This list endangers my American Jewish community. We are lucky to be able to pass for White. I get reminded about once a year that we're not.

Please consider ways to help Palestinians without endangering Jews, and do not condone the work of anti-Semites.

Thank you.

Edit: I should also have said "and the people who wrote this think all Jews are White and that it's a White vs Arab thing."

Please, if you are involved in organizations that support Palestinians, keep in mind that Jews are not a monolithic entity and that we're working to combat racism too... and that we encounter microaggressions all of the time. Blanket advertising of an anti-Israel group that also uses anti-Semitic language - and targets day schools - is not a nuanced response.

Thank you for listening.

Well, May has been a "fun" month: gun violence, Roe v Wade (and the implications of the leaked draft for other rights) and the latest Republican plans to enmesh themselves in corrupting the voting process.

Time for a deep breath and a moment to reset, before getting back to doing what each of us is able to.

Here are the posts we've had in the comm since the last check in on Roe v Wade. Some of these events are past, but the linked organisations have ongoing ways to be involved.

I'm sure we've all been shocked by the appalling news coming out from Ukraine over the past couple of weeks after the invasion by Russia. We have a post collecting practical ways you can help that's included in the links below.

In light of the recent hearings before the Supreme Court, it seems like a good time to link this post with some resources for campaigning on abortion rights and this post with a link to a list of abortion funds (We also have tags for abortion rights and reproductive health that you may find useful.)

We haven't had any new posts since the last check in, although I'm sure things will pick up once we start getting into next year's elections. But this seems like a good time to ask if you want to see anything different from the comm going forwards. Let us know in comments if you have any suggestions.

The infrastructure bill has finally passed (with much difficulty) and we've just had a set of slightly disappointing (if not unexpected) election results. All of which emphasises the value of having a decent majority in every branch of government — and the importance of gearing back up at the start of next year to really fight hard for the elections in November 2022.

We have an old Election Resources Roundup post that's a good place to start if you're looking for actions or to reconnect with past efforts. Do let us know in comments if there's anything we should add to the list or anything we should drop.

We've avoided a shutdown — for now. Meanwhile, the infrastructure and social and environmental bills are bogged down and the Republicans are being obstructionist over the debt limit. This is your regular reminder of the importance of working from the grassroots up to get more Democrats elected at every level, so small groups can't hold up vital or ambitious legislation.

If you know of any efforts to provide assistance to people who have been affected by the storms, flooding and ongoing wildfires, please drop a line in comments or feel free to make a post.

Alongside the human-created "natural" disasters, another big news story in the last month has been the new anti-abortion law in Texas (and the Supreme Court's refusal to intervene). The two posts in the comm since the last check in relate to that:

Submitting Junk data to the 'abortion reporting' form — I understand the website/form has now been kicked off its hosting for violating Terms of Service relating to collecting personal data, but it may pop up elsewhere and there are some good ideas in comments for how to respond to similar forms in future.

The comm's been a bit busier over the last month. I'm not sure that's entirely a good thing, in that it means there are issues and actions people need to raise — but it's great to have these things brought to the comm when they do exist.
