I'm copying a post by [personal profile] rushthatspeaks about helping people in ICE detention camps; rushthatspeakss note that they're basically reposting something they found on Tumblr. (I was going to repost rather than linking, but I couldn't cope with reading the content, and link labels, closely. We do what we can, and I will stop trying to find the "right" phrasing for having limits.

[personal profile] gingicat asked in the comments of the weekly check in post "What can we do directly to help the children in the concentration camps?"

It's far from feeling satisfactory, but here is what I've found via this thread on Twitter which seems to be sourcing the NYT article on the camps: ‘There Is a Stench’: No Soap and Overcrowding in Detention Centers for Migrant Children

It boils down to
1. Call your Senators and Congresspeople to demand congressional hearings.
2. Financially support non-profits on the ground in Texas

It's been a while since our last check in. I've been traveling, with limited internet access, so I'm not sure I've caught up on everything that happened while I was offline. But enough to know that Trump, Pence and their minions continue to be despicable.

Thanks to everyone who's been posting action items and links! Here's a reminder of what's been happening in the comm since our last check in:

The price is that people donate to the fundraiser for six awesome groups in the UK and US supporting/representing people harmed by Trump and far-right politics:

A Happy New Year to all our members and a big welcome to the new Congress!

The shutdown continues -- sympathies to all who are affected -- and Cheetolini continues with his tantrum, but there are signs that Republican Senators who are up for re-election in 2020 are vulnerable to pressure to pass bills coming from the House that don't include money for the Wall. (Thom Tillis (NC) has joined Cory Gardner (CO) and Susan Collins (ME) in calling for an end to the shutdown.) So keep up those calls if you can!

We still have plenty of other ongoing actions. Fannishly, creator sign-ups for Fandom Trumps Hate open today and just before Christmas [personal profile] rydra_wong called for us to "Support your local muckrakers". Plus:

[community profile] fandomtrumpshate has moved to Dreamwidth and just announced the schedule and selection of supported non-profits for 2019.

Quoting from their promotion post:
FandomTrumpsHate is a pan-fandom fanworks auction dedicated to supporting those who are most vulnerable under the current United States presidential administration. Creators can offer any of five types of fanwork -- fic, art, podfic, vids, or fan labor (such as beta reading or translation) -- in exchange for donations to non-profit organizations. In our first two years, we've raised over $50,000 for a range of good causes.
All fandoms, large and small, are welcome.
The selection of non-profits includes lots we're familiar with here at [community profile] thisfinecrew (e.g. RAICES and RAINN) as well as some other great causes.

Creator sign ups open Sunday, January 6th and there's a post with all the other key dates.

Latest update from Heidi Feldman, running the fundraiser:

By the end of the year, proceeds from this fundraiser will supply the inaugural gift to the American Psychological Foundation ( https://www.apa.org/apf/) to create the Christine Blasey Ford Research Grant for the Study of Trauma Related to Sexual Abuse, Sexual Violence, or Sexual Harassment. At least one grant annually (more if more money is raised) will go to a rising researcher working in one of these areas.

Eligibility requirements for grant recipients will be modeled on those used for the existing APF Trauma Psychology Grant, which is facilitated by the Trauma Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association ( https://www.apatraumadivision.org/).

Note: the naming of the grant is with Dr Blasey's express approval, and

she expressed delight and enthusiasm about how this endowment can “pay it forward” (her phrase), providing resources for young researchers working to understand trauma.

This week, I've been enjoying watching Mueller moving forward with his strategy of taking down Trump like the Mob boss he is, with the developments in the Manafort and Cohen prosecutions.

Meanwhile, this video of Trump at the G20 is surely all the evidence needed for someone to invoke section 4 of the 25th amendment. And for a little light relief, enjoy this video of It Wasn't Me, Re-released for Trump.

It's been quiet in the comm this week, but there's still some run-off election action to get involved in, and plenty of ongoing actions.

As seems to be the case on three-day weekends for me, the check-in post is a day late. Apologies for that. It's been a rollercoaster of a week with the Democrats taking the House and a lot of down-ballot races and the firing of Attorney General Sessions imperiling the Mueller investigation. It's a good reminder that we still have two more years under this regime and we're still going to have to fight every step of the way.

Thank you to everyone who voted in the election. Thank you to everyone who contributed in big ways and small to campaigns across the country. Thank you to all our overseas friends who've supported us throughout with information and encouragement. Never give up, never surrender.

Most recent update from GoFundMe: Honor Dr. Blasey as an Educator

Today, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Blasey, for the first time. She reached out to express appreciation for funds raised for her security costs in a separate GFM that I sponsored. This gave me the chance to ask if she is comfortable having her name used on the academic endowment to honor her as an educator. She not only gave preliminary approval, she expressed delight and enthusiasm about how this endowment can “pay it forward” (her phrase), providing resources for young researchers working to understand trauma.

Meanwhile, the institution with which I am working to create the formal endowment has given approval in concept. They are now proceeding with their internal processes to make sure the gift can be accepted and used consistent with donor intent. Bottom line: we are very likely to have a formal structure to announce by year end, and I hope well before.

This campaign to honor Dr. Blasey as an educator will remain open at least until the endowment arrangements are finalized. I will let you know when that happens.

The Great Slate now has seven races polling within the margin of errror:

https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1058835720142512128

(And they have some matching funds, if they've still got any left by now; DM or e-mail or Tweet to get it matched.)

As I understand it, this is pretty much the last point when extra donations will make a difference to anything before Tuesday, so if you have any spare cash left, then they and/or Donate Save America (plus any individual candidates you like) seem like solid choices.

H/t to [personal profile] jjhunter for the heads-up -- two more GiveSmart slates (trying to flip state legislatures):

GiveSmart NY
GiveSmart 6: Run for Something and Future Now

The various GiveSmart slates have collectively raised $750,000 and they're hoping to hit $1 million before this is done.

The Great Slate (Congressional candidates) has some matching funding going on at the moment (or did 11 hours ago, anyway).

Donate Save America (targeted for maximum efficiency!) is also shooting for $1 million.

GrabYourBallot (tight House and Senate races and governorships) is at over $200,000.

If you have particular favorite candidates or slates you'd like to promote, I suggest linking in comments!

It's been a rough week. The election is coming up and early voting has started in many states. This is the time to do your ballot research for the down-ballot races. First of all, my heart goes out to the Jewish community in Pittsburgh and around the world in the wake of yesterday's shooting. I wish I had better words.

Second, here are links to donate directly to the Tree of Life synagogue and to HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society that the terrorist gunman was against.

From VoteSaveAmerica:

https://secure.actblue.com/donate/donate-save-america

Our smart friends at the data firm Civis crunched the numbers and found that donating to these 20 specific House candidates would give you the most bang for your buck. Here’s why:

1. They are expected to be extremely close races

2. They have less expensive media markets so each advertising dollar will go a lot further

3. You donations will actually help improve Democrats' chances of winning in these races by boosting voter turnout

In fact, according to the Head of Political Data Science at Civis, every dollar you donate toward this list of races would generate roughly 2.2 times as many votes than if you just donated to the 20 closest races across the country.

The list includes Alyse Galvin (Alaska) and Kathleen Williams (Montana, running against the unspeakable Gianforte).

The Great Slate currently has someone matching donations (so anything you donate is doubled)

Over $20,000 of matching left at last tweet: https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1053858998355673088

So if you'd like to donate to them but haven't gotten around to it yet, now might be a good time.
