Since the last check-in, Mueller has submitted his report to the Attorney General. Trump and his allies have declared total vindication based on Barr’s summary. I think we’re all pretty sure it isn’t that clear cut and that there’s plenty for various committees in Congress to pick over (and Mueller’s grand jury is still sitting). Plus I keep reminding myself Watergate took a long time to reach its conclusion.

In better news, a federal judge in Alaska has overturned Trump’s attempt to open parts of the Arctic and Atlantic to oil and gas leasing.

In the comm, we’ve had some great suggestions for action since the last check-in posts.

Are we all exhausted? I'm exhausted.

The comm's been quiet, but that's okay. We'll have quiet periods. I hope everyone is weathering the Tumblr Purge and the rest of December okay. Welcome new members and subscribers! You can scroll back through and see what types of things folks post. Mostly this is a place to bring political news and actions to the attention of the community.

This week, I've been enjoying watching Mueller moving forward with his strategy of taking down Trump like the Mob boss he is, with the developments in the Manafort and Cohen prosecutions.

Meanwhile, this video of Trump at the G20 is surely all the evidence needed for someone to invoke section 4 of the 25th amendment. And for a little light relief, enjoy this video of It Wasn't Me, Re-released for Trump.

It's been quiet in the comm this week, but there's still some run-off election action to get involved in, and plenty of ongoing actions.

Lots of encouraging news over the past week from races that went to recounts or simply took a while to call. We have an Election Results: The Sequel! thread to talk about the results coming in. There's also still work to be done in the run-off election in Mississippi -- and plenty of new and ongoing actions in other areas to get to grips with as the fight goes on.

First the bad news. If anyone hasn't read the Seth Abramson Twitter thread on why Whitaker as Acting AG is even worse than we thought on first glance, go do that, please.
https://twitter.com/SethAbramson/status/1060925606966296576

Now the good news. A politically active friend who couldn't make the protest yesterday Resistbotted our Republican Senator, Rob Portman, and 1: already received a reply today! and 2: reported that it said that Portman is in favor of protecting the Mueller investigation!

And now the "let's get back to work" news: Portman's aides may be writing this back to people on letterhead, but it's not in his press releases or on either his Senatorial or campaign Twitter, which means he's perfectly happy to say something privately but not publicly. So for my fellow Ohio people (all four of us): we gotta keep calling. And we need to tell Portman to make some specific action steps.

So people who are better at this than me: what specifically should we be asking our senators (people like Rob Portman or Poor Susan Collins who is concerned but can't do anything but wring her hands) to do?

I'll update this post with your ideas.

Specific Actions Steps Senators Can Take
*Make a public statement denouncing the Whitaker appointment
*Demand an injunction against Whitaker being made Attorney General
*???

The people who are organizing the emergency/rapid response to protect the Mueller investigation have apparently concluded that Trump firing sessions, and the acting AG announcing he will be supervising the investigation, is close enough to the red line that there are rallies tomorrow at 5:

https://www.trumpisnotabovethelaw.org/event/mueller-firing-rapid-response/search/

Addendum (8 pm EST): I was expecting a text message about this by now. At this point, I am assuming I'll know more, one way or the other, in the morning.

8:20 And I have an email saying it's on in Boston, more details tonight and tomorrow morning.
