[personal profile] notasupervillain asked in a comment on another post if we knew of any communities similar to this one for UK activism. I thought I'd make a top level post, as I know we have other members from the UK who may be able to provide an answer and may not see that comment.

And as we have members from other countries outside the US (*waves at Canadians* Not sure which other countries are represented!), I thought I'd throw the question open even wider and make this a general resource post for people to share links to any local activist communities they'd recommend.

Communities don't have to be on Dreamwidth -- any group with a (positive!) online presence somewhere for sharing ideas and actions is good. :-)

It's been a while since our last check in. I've been traveling, with limited internet access, so I'm not sure I've caught up on everything that happened while I was offline. But enough to know that Trump, Pence and their minions continue to be despicable.

Thanks to everyone who's been posting action items and links! Here's a reminder of what's been happening in the comm since our last check in:

Support The No Ban Act
National Nurses United Medicare For All Tools
Signal Boost: Captain Awkward On Activism In These Stressful Times
Two Worthwhile Newsletters For Local Action
Trump Baby Will Fly Again -- For A Price

I've been thoroughly enjoying the newsletters from Primaries for Progress and Give Smart. You may remember the latter as the people who masterminded late-breaking lightning rounds of donations for down-ticket candidates with the best possible chance of using the money effectively late in the 2018 election; it's a project of FutureNow. The former is associated with Data for Progress and is dedicated to the idea of getting better candidates in Democratic seats and blue regions.

Primaries for Progress has both a paid and non-paid version; I get the free version and it's chock full of useful information including people to support (and not to support), people who really need a primary challenger, and more, nationwide. The GiveSmart newsletter is totally free.

I want to recommend Captain Awkward's recent post "We Have Always Lived In Presidential Primary Season: A Half-Assed Activist Post About Getting Through This Shitshow Without Perpetuating Or Tolerating Bad Behavior And Keeping Some Tiny Spark Of Hope Alive". The article is a combination of things Jennifer thinks, or hopes, might be useful politically, and suggestions on not driving yourself up the wall in the process. It's a public post on her Patreon page, which she's encouraging people to link to.

As she says there, she's not interested in re-litigating anything about the 2016 elections or in debate about specific candidates or political leanings.

For all US folks going into the election, here is an excellent multimedia resource for anyone having difficulties voting: 866ourvote.org.

And, yes, that is also an actual phone number, 866-687-8683 and a text resource, where you can text "Our vote" to 97779. The hotline is run by the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law. They also have a bunch of affiliates for speakers of languages-not-English.

ETA: thanks to [personal profile] julian who commented with more hotline numbers for speakers of different languages, and I quote:

"888-Ve-Y-Vota is the Spanish-language hotline.

844-Yalla-US is the Arabic one

and 888-API-VOTE serves a number of Asian and Pacific Island language"

and I added the sign language video hotline: 301-818-8683

Useful for anyone doing door-to-door or phone banking, also potentially useful to think about for people trying to informally drag friends and acquaintances to the polls:

Volunteer to help elect Democrats!

BallotReady.org, which lets you research all the races and referenda on the ballot for your location.

Motivote, which sort of "gamifies" the midterm voting process (you sign up at the site and as you complete various actions to prepare to vote, you're entered to win prizes.)

In honor of National Voter Registration Day in the US, here is a lightly annotated list of links to voter information/registration sites and related information for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with an emphasis on getting information about statewide referenda/ballot initiatives/other laws and similar that might be on a given state's ballot. (Edited 10/8/18 with a missed text link!)

Following suggestions made in comments to our Anniversary Post, we now have a Friending Meme and a (locked) post where you can connect with others who live in the same area. We hope you find both of these posts useful!

Feel free to make more suggestions for how we might develop the comm in the Anniversary Post.

Other posts in the comm this week covered:

Net Neutrality
Ballotpedia: resource for keeping track of federal and local politics news

Housekeeping (the usual stuff)
Reminder that we have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru. Both [personal profile] tassosss and I are very grateful for the help.

So, what have you all been up to in the last week or are planning to get involved in next week?

I've talked about Ballotpedia before, but I'm going to do it again, because they just keep being such a great resource. The website is a wiki written by professional staffers and committed to neutrality. If you want to look up new or old races, down to state legislative and sometimes even local races in your state, the website is great.

My favorite project of theirs, however, is their weekly newsletter The Tap. Here is this week's state/local edition and here is the federal edition, with tons of useful political news happening all across the company. If you want to know what legislation is getting close to being passed in other states, Ballotpedia has it. If you want to know about the recent and future Supreme Court activity, Ballotpedia has that, too. They are a GOLDMINE.

Lots of great resources, worthy places to donate you probably haven't seen yet, what supplies are needed--and putting the storm in the context of a broader recovery effort.

The city of Boston has put up a climate change website that republishes EPA and other federal government stuff that the current administration has scrubbed:

http://climatechangedata.boston.gov/

The top of the home page identifies it as a City of Boston site, and says
The City of Boston wishes to acknowledge and attribute this information to the United States Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies for the decades of work that they have done to advance the fight against climate change. While this information may not be readily available on the agency’s webpage right now, here in Boston we know climate change is real and we will continue to take action to fight it.

I haven't explored very much yet, but there's a lot there.
