The news of the week is Hurricana Harvey relief and DACA.

Housekeeping (the usual stuff)

Reminder that we have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru.

Did something else: spent three and a half hours one day, two hours on the next helping to sort, pack, and load donations for the truck that one of my neighbors (who is from Austin) rented to take down to the Gulf. We'll be sending lots more shipments. After the holiday I'll try to get the pastor of the local Lutheran church to donate the clothes, etc. collected for the rummage sales that they don't have any more.

And, when things simmer down a little, I'm going to try to launch a book drive, and figure out the best places to buy stuff wholesale so we can leverage our donation dollars.

I joined Postcards to Voters, a grassroots organization that sends hand-written postcards to potential progressive voters. You provide your own postcards and stamps (there's a post about resources for these), they provide names and addresses and info about the candidate.

I live in a blue state and I'm petrified of cold calls, so this is a way I can contribute to GOTV efforts in other areas. And I know how I feel when I get hand-written mail, so I figure this may grab the attention of people the way mass-printed mailers might not.
