The Army Corps of Engineers, which is in charge of the border wall project, was halted this week by a peaceful protest of Kumeyaay tribal members near San Diego.

The wall promises ecological and humanitarian devastation, and furthermore, multiple tribal entities and bands of Indigenous people have had dynamite blasts and heavy equipment potentially touch or damage burial grounds and sacred sites. The tribe was not consulted about the use of explosives, and demands the Army Corp of Engineers stop construction and the city of San Diego enforce laws to protect sacred land and cultural resources. The TohonoOodham Nation, the Kumeyaay, are currently trying to stop the federal waiver of dozens of laws, including treaty laws, to expedite construction and permit the use of such construction techniques.

If you're in the neighborhood, the Kumeyaay Nation is rallying for support outside the SanDiegoCourthouse, 330 W. BROADWAY, SAN DIEGO, CA, today.

If not, call the Border Community Liason Agent, Daniel Rubio (619-938-8739), and demand that all construction is immediately halted and that the ACE seek Native onsite monitors, prepare soil tests in all areas under construction, and respect Kumeyaay Nation sovereignty on their own lands. This will have the double impact of delaying construction, perhaps indefinitely, and defending sacred indigenous sites.

At times, I've found Mr. Rubio's voicemail to be full, so you can call the ACE Civil Works division here (202-761-7690) and the Chief of Public Affairs here (202-761-4715).

Nancy Pelosi has called for confederate statues to be removed from the Capitol Building. In many cases, this is actually "up to the states", because each state can send up to two statues to be included in the National Statuary Hall Collection to "honor persons notable in their history."

You can find out which statues are representing your state and whether you need to contact your representatives to push for their removal at this site:

This was prompted by a post at the AskAManager blog:

If, like me, you are worried that areas, stores, libraries, what-have-you may be reopening faster than is safe, it's worth calling the most local elected officials or agencies. The governor may not care what one person says; the town of Belmont, with a much smaller population, is more likely to.

I just wrote to the town administrator's office, and to the town library, telling them that I value their services, but not enough to be worth endangering staff lives.

Policing is super local, so asking for reform and defunding needs to happen at all levels.

You can find letter templates for your city or county here address to councils and mayors, and if it's not on the list, please consider submitting one. It's on github, and to submit you need an account, but a friend with a github account (mostlyinane on twitter) is willing to put them in for folks so put your letter in comments or pm me and I'll get it to her.

For those like me, who need things split out from the google docs to help combat overwhelm, here are links to Bail Funds that are supporting the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as keeping folks out of jail while there's a pandemic on.

Act Blue will split your donation among their list or you can donate to specific funds.

List of Individual bail funds by city and state (similar list to Act Blue but with direct links to the organization webpages).

It's a good idea to check the fund webpage before donating because there has been a lot of support and they may redirect you to another fund. That said, I did a one time donation to the group supported by Act Blue then set up monthly donations to the fund in my state.

Please share if you have other lists you've found helpful.

A thread about the research:
For those who are interested in research-based solutions to stop police violence, here’s what you need to know - based on the facts and data. A thread.

A thread about legislation
*Activists and Legislators:* Here’s a thread of MEANINGFUL legislation that has been proposed and, in some cases, passed in cities and states to address police violence. Consider passing legislation like this in your community, too.

Also, [community profile] fandomtrumpshate has a post on Black Lives Matter: Resources for Supporting the Protests, covering donating, how to protest safely, non-monetary support and good sources of information.

Alongside helping out in the U.S. (check out your local bail fund or donate to several at once), the Philippines is facing something very scary. The so-called 'Anti-Terrorism Bill' "criminalizes activism, labels any form of dissent as terrorism, and allows civilians to be unlawfully monitored and arrested without a warrant." (Thanks to [twitter.com profile] ookhaes for the information and language.)

Please check THIS Google Doc for further information and template emails to send, and informative compilations to share across your platforms.

Washington state is requiring insurance companies to allow one early refill on any prescription during the virus outbreak. I just called the Massachusetts governor's office to ask them to require insurers to do here.

A possible script:

"Hi, my name is $your name. I'm a constituent living in city/town, and I'm calling about the coronavirus outbreak.

"I'm asking the governor to please follow Washington State's lead, by requiring insurers to allow one early refill on any prescription medication, unless that would threaten the patient's safety, until this epidemic is over."

I put "state" in there to make it clear I'm talking about the Washington state government, not anything in D.C.

The proposed rule change would increase the frequency of "reviews" of Social Security disability benefits--i.e., take away people's benefits. If you can submit a public comment, they're required to consider each individual comment; they may not care, but those comments could be useful when a lawsuit is filed to block the damn thing. The public comment period ends on Friday, January 31.

ProgressAmerica has a "take action" link, with suggested wording. is here: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/act-now-protect-social-security-oppose-the-trump-administrations-cruel-policy
As always, for public comments it's important to at least rephrase the suggested wording, whether or not you add anything. (I made mine personal, talking about someone I know who this might harm.)

Formally, this is Docket No. SSA-2018-0026; Rules Regarding the Frequency and Notice of Continuing Disability Reviews

It's been a rough week with elections in the UK where a Tory majority was elected. In the US, the House Judiciary Committee has leveled two articles of Impeachment against Trump. We'll see where it goes. Also, for those following along at home, the next budget deadline is Friday Dec 20 for keeping the government open.

In comm news, as you've probably seen [personal profile] tanaqui  is going to start up a sister comm for UK actions in the wake of the election and is looking for co-mods and name ideas.

It's been an eventful week, with the release of transcripts of witness testimony from the impeachment hearings, ground rules being laid for the public hearings starting next week and some pleasing election results. Also not a good week in court for the Trump family, with Trump fined for misusing his charitable foundation and being ordered to turn over his tax returns to a grand jury.

It's been quiet in the comm, but do let us know in comments what you've been up to. It's always good to hear from you!
