Updating an earlier post, the petition drive for a ballot measure to restore voting rights to released felons in Florida has enough signatures -- it's going to be on the ballot!

If I understand correctly, it'll need 60% support to pass, so this is just the first step in a longer fight. But we won the first round!

It's 2018 folks, and a lot of big issues are still pending - DACA, Children's Health Care, and yes, keeping the government open, once again.

Also, another reminder that we now have a Friending Meme and a (locked) post where you can connect with others with live in the same area. We hope you find both of these posts useful!

Posts in the comm since the last check-in covered:

Actions
Support Florida Voting Rights
Support the Net Neutrality Bill in Congress
Support Children's Health Insurance Program. Day of Action was on the 10th but you can still contact your Congress people
Webinar on Sanctuary Policies

We the Resistance Newsletter with info on #MeTooK12 harassment prevention in schools, as well as other sexual equality and people with vaginas health issues
Report on Climate Change censorship
Summary of the Organizing for Action Volunteer Call including DACA, Civic Engagementin and upcoming volunteer opportunities
Run to Win Online Candidate Training - anyone on the comm planning to run for office, or know someone who is?

Housekeeping (the usual stuff)
Reminder that we have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru. Both [personal profile] tanaqui  and I are very grateful for the help.

So, what have you all been up to in the last week or are planning to get involved in next week?

Personally, I've been trying to make Wednesday my call Congress day.

I saw this here a while back in a link roundup, but I wanted to make sure everyone saw it!

There's a petition drive to get a measure onto the 2018 ballot that would return voting rights to up to 1.6 million people in Florida.

Florida is one of the few states that permanently takes away the right to vote, even once people have served their time and returned to their communities. 1 in 10 people in Florida have had their voting rights taken away for life.

The petition drive only needs another ~100,000 signatures, but they need them in the next three weeks.

What you can do:

If you're a registered voter in Florida, go to the link above, and they will mail you a petition for you to sign and mail back ASAP. (You can have more than one voter sign the same petition -- just don't sign twice!)

If you're not a registered voter in Florida, but know someone who might be, please pass the info along. (You can also donate at the link above, to pay for having petitions mailed out and back.)

(btw, one of the co-sponsors of this project is StayWoke.org, one of the groups that did so much good on the ground in Alabama this year. Let's keep it going!)

While we're all celebrating the wonderful result in Alabama, it's worth noting that the (narrow) result was achieved despite confirmed reports of many different attempts at voter suppression.

Various commentators are suggesting the Republicans will only intensify their efforts to suppress votes for their opponents in future races. So it seems a good time to gather together links for a number of organisations who are working to combat voter suppression, improve voter education and get out the vote:

The League of Women Voters

Vote Latino

ACLU (They have a match funding donation drive on right now.)

NAACP

NAACP Legal Defense Fund (Note: this is a separate charity from the NAACP and handles the most prominent cases. They also have a match funding donation drive on at the moment)

VoteRiders

SecondChancesFL -- a campaign to get a voting rights amendment onto the November 2018 ballot which would restore voting rights to 1.6 million felons, many of them people of color, in Florida. They need enough signatures in the next 50 days to get the measure onto the ballot.

If you know of any other resources, please link them in the comments!

That's the subject of this petition at the Ben & Jerry's website:

I debated posting about it here, not least because I'm not sure what good it alone can do, but it's a useful starting point for writing and calling our elected officials about the VRA. I hope, anyway.

I found out about this via the League of Women Voters. This act, introduced in both the Senate and the House, has the stated purpose "To require States to automatically register eligible voters to vote in elections for Federal office, and for other purposes."

Among other things, it would automatically register eligible voters via information they provide to various government offices, such as the DMV. A number of states have take this kind of legislation up, and a few have passed it, but it would be wonderful to have this on a federal level, for all states.

It's S. 1353 in the Senate and H.R. 2876 in the House. Call your reps and ask them to support this act by co-sponsoring it.

What we're seeing right now in Washington with the AHCA is what happens when the elected officials are not sensitive to the needs of their constituents. To force them to care, we have to make it easier for those constituents to make their voices heard in the voting booth.
