there's no harm (and may even be some help) in calling our Congresspeople to step up.

I put together a calling script that is entirely composed of: the 5 Calls calling script from August, the ACLU statement regarding Sessions' firing, and the Twitter statement by Chuck Schumer. Feel free to use it!

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [LOCATION.]

I'm calling to urge [CONGRESSCRITTER] to make a public statement demanding that Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker commit to not interfere in the special counsel investigation of the 2016 presidential election. Robert Mueller MUST continue to operate under the special counsel regulation, and Whitaker should recuse himself from oversight based on his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation. It's the duty of Congress to serve as a check on Trump and prevent him from sending our democracy into a constitutional crisis.

Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

[IF LEAVING A VOICEMAIL: please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied]

Call both your senators and your representative. If they've already spoken out against Whitaker, thank them.

Call the Department of Justice. I'm not 100% sure which number to use for the Department of Justice, but it's probably one of these two: Department Comment Line: 202-353-1555
Department of Justice Main Switchboard: 202-514-2000

White House: Comments: 202-456-1111
Switchboard: 202-456-1414

If anyone else has suggestions for those of us who get antsy if we can't do anything RIGHT NOW, please let me know in comments. I'll be updating this all evening.

The people who are organizing the emergency/rapid response to protect the Mueller investigation have apparently concluded that Trump firing sessions, and the acting AG announcing he will be supervising the investigation, is close enough to the red line that there are rallies tomorrow at 5:

Addendum (8 pm EST): I was expecting a text message about this by now. At this point, I am assuming I'll know more, one way or the other, in the morning.

8:20 And I have an email saying it's on in Boston, more details tonight and tomorrow morning.

and Trump has appointed an Acting Attorney General who will be overseeing the Mueller investigation rather than Rosenstein:

Hopefully firing Sessions has been enough to quieten Trump down for the evening, but if not:

Make sure you have the details for your local Mueller Firing Rapid Response rally

I am actually relieved that the new Acting AG has previously been speculating about shutting down Mueller without firing him by starving him of funds, because it suggests he might try that first and you guys get to regroup a bit before the constitutional crisis:
