What the committees should be concerned about: Mick Mulvaney is a "Tea Party" Republican congressman from South Carolina who is "a fierce advocate of deep spending cuts", often opposing the Republican party's budget proposals as not going far enough. He was elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010 after branding the long-serving Democratic incumbent as a "big-spending liberal, unconcerned about fiscal prudence".

During the Obama's administration, he was proud to identify himself as part of the “Shutdown Caucus”, because of his willingness to shut the government down rather than raise the nation's debt limit. He was one of several dozen House Republicans who refused to back the deal to raise the statutory debt limit, has advocated for a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution, and sees major cuts to benefit programs as the path to balancing the budget.

Mulvaney's handling of his own finances and tax affairs has come under scrutiny. During the confirmation review process, it came to light that he failed to pay more than $15,000 in payroll taxes for a member of his household staff more than a decade ago. Mulvaney claims he has now paid the tax, interest and penalties to the IRS and is waiting for state taxes to be determined. However, very similar tax problems have forced previous Democratic nominees for both Presidents Clinton and Obama to withdraw from consideration after pressure from Senate Republicans.

As budget director, Mulvaney would be charged with pushing Trump’s budget proposals through Congress and overseeing the final issuance of major regulations. He will likely be responsible for helping fulfill some of the president-elect’s campaign promises, including the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, a boost in infrastructure investment, and a reworking of the tax code.

Suggested script for calling representatives:"Hi, my name is ________, and I'm a constituent of the Senator. I want to let the Senator know that I object to Representative Mick Mulvaney as the next Director of the Office of Management and Budget because he has shown he is more interested in ideological posturing than in creating a functioning government. As part of the "Shutdown Caucus", he was willing to close down government functions that deliver vital services to millions of Americans rather than work positively towards a sustainable budget. He has also proved incapable of managing his own finances properly, having failed to pay the correct payroll taxes for his household staff. Similar tax breaches have required many previous nominees to withdraw from consideration. Representative Mulvaney's aggressive and self-centred approach to past U.S. budgets, together with his demonstrable financial incompetence on a personal level, make him unsuited to taking a leading role in creating a workable budget for the U.S. government, and he should therefore not be our next Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Please use the comments to suggest more reasons why the committee should reject the nomination and to suggest amendments to the calling script.
