S. 2767: SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act doesn't actually eliminate the savings penalty for people on Supplemental Security Income, but it would raise the limit from the $2000 per single individual implemented in 1972 [sic] to $10,000, and remove the penalty for couples.

Dear US Senator,

I am writing to ask you to support S. 2767: the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act. People on Supplemental Security Income deserve to have the ability to save enough money to have a meaningful cushion in case of emergencies. The current limit of $2000 per single individual is insufficient considering the amount of inflation that has happened since it went into place in 1972.

The bill would raise the limit to $10,000 per person, which is what the limit would be now if the number had been linked to inflation. It would give me peace of mind to know that my friends and relatives who rely on SSI could have a more significant amount of money saved to insulate them from worst-case scenarios. Ideally, you could author a bill that would increase the savings limit farther, but S. 2767 would at least be a step in the right direction.
