Use this post to talk about the results.

Are there any (unexpectedly) good results in your district or state? Or in districts where you've been volunteering though organisations like Swing Left or Sister District? Are there any results you're excited about for candidates outside your district that you've been following/donating to (perhaps from the various slates we've posted)?

Share the squee or commiserate about near misses!

(Posted early because I'm out for the evening and want to make sure this is ready for when you need it!)

No results, but today is my birthday, so I've been encouraging people to show me voting selfies or tell me when they voted as my birthday present today. I'm not sure whether it has GOTV, but it has at least made my birthday less a mess of election result nerves.

Since apparently at least two of you really want to know the outcomes for all 40+ candidates I donated $10 to, I'm going to organize this by starting a separate comment thread for each slate, with a subthread for each individual candidate.

If you happen to learn the outcome of any of these races before I do, please don't hesitate to reply to the relevant subthread to let us all know! I plan on going to bed early.

As someone who lives in OH-10, I think we did great considering that this district is drawn as basically how do we keep Dayton from getting a Democrat representative. To the point that Mike Turner hasn't held a town hall or anything open to all constituents in literal years.

I'm hoping Ohio's redistricting reform will change this in another 4 years.

From: [personal profile] kore
Kris Kobach, the horrible racist guy who came up IIRC with the disenfranchising matching registration bullshit, has LOST to Laura Kelly for the governorship of Kansas.

I grew up in New Mexico so I am THRILLED there is a new woman Democratic governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham.

And Sharice Davids has just made history as "the first Native American woman to serve in Congress — a distinction she was expected to share with New Mexico’s Deb Haaland, who was also heading to victory Tuesday night — and the first openly LGBT person to represent the state of Kansas." Great story here: https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/election/article221156115.html

Also of great personal satisfaction, the county clerk in Kentucky who famously denied marriage licenses to same-sex couples – has lost to Democratic challenger Elwood Caudill Jr., who was one of the gay men she denied a license to.

THE NEW SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE WILL BE NANCY PELOSI (AGAIN) YEEEEEEEEEEEEAH

Democrat pulls ahead in Arizona Senate race

According to the Arizona Secretary of State website, Sinema now leads McSally by a little over 2000 votes.

Sinema: 914,243 — 48.91%
McSally: 912,137 — 48.80%https://t.co/FNfqys0v0z

It’s still too soon to know who will ultimately prevail. Earlier in the day, McSally had 856,848 votes (49.37%), while Sinema had 839,775 votes (48.39%), according to the Arizona Republic.

So that would be Tester, Manchin (ugh), Rosen in NV, and HOPEFULLY Sinema. And maybe a recount in Florida for Nelson. And this when "According to FiveThirtyEight, Democrats faced the most unfavorable Senate map in 2018 that any party has ever faced in any election."

AND Massachusetts affirms transgender protections!

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2018/nov/06/us-midterms-elections-2018-latest-live-polls-news-updates-donald-trump-republicans-democrats?page=with:block-5be268e6e4b0e3827e155ba1#block-5be268e6e4b0e3827e155ba1

In the first statewide referendum on transgender rights, Massachusetts voters on Tuesday beat back a repeal attempt and reaffirmed a 2016 law extending nondiscrimination protections to transgender people, including their use of public bathrooms and locker rooms, the AP reports:

Supporters of the law had feared a vote to repeal would prompt a wave of similar efforts to roll back protections in other states. Already, some protections at the federal level are under threat from President Donald Trump’s administration.

“When transgender rights are being threatened nationally, we absolutely must preserve the rights we have secured at the state level,” said Carol Rose, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts.

I think it's a pretty fucking big blue wave. Not a blue tsunami, which was kinda unfair of the media to hype, and a lot of the long-shot very publicized races (Beto, others) didn't work out for Dems, but this is AMAZING, in terms of how many votes are needed to flip this many seats while taking all the fucking gerrymandering into account. I'm not ecstatic, but I think this is a very very very good result. There's also a lot of flipping going on in gubernatorial and state senate races, I think.

I mean, yesterday people were going "It might all come down to California!" (in an obvious echo of 2016 and how many pop votes Hillary got there) "We might not know for a MONTH if the house depends on CA!" and they've already flipped a big majority in the house and the CA polls haven't even closed yet. That such a big flip happened so quickly, despite the gerrymandering and without CA, is a huge thing.

And I mean there's something like 76K votes separating Gillum and his opponent. That is pretty fucking amazing And there was still disenfranchisement going on, in FL and GA. Stacey Abrams supporters are saying don't give up with like 99% of the vote in because there still could be a statistical chance of a runoff. There have been losses, yeah, but close ones. At least one runoff already happening (GA). The difference in the Walker race right now is I think 7K votes!

....meanwhile MSNBC has the white male conservative asswipe who keeps dominating the conversation and going "NO BLUE WAVE! NO BIG WIN!" and "exurban!" every five minutes and Andrea Mitchell is literally sitting there looking at her phone because he won't let anyone else talk. It's a pretty diverse panel (two white women, two black guys) and this white guy is STILL BABBLING. ...oh wait no, Tom Brokaw just replaced one of the white guys. WTF is he still doing up at this hour.
