Check In 29 September

This week saw the launch of a formal impeachement inquiry into Trump, following revelations about the phone call with the president of Ukraine. And it turns out there isn't just one whistleblower but two, with other one alleging possible interference with the IRS audit of Trump's tax returns.

We've only had one new post in the comm, but plenty of ongoing actions -- those relating to immigration have new impetus from the news that the administration is drastically cutting the number of refugees allowed to enter the country.

And please do continue to tell us in the comments what you've been doing! It's great to hear about all the amazing things our members are involved in and a chance for you to inspire others to join in.

Went canvassing on Tuesday, will be canvassing again next Tuesday.

One protest yesterday to stop the bigots from marching through the gay village, one at an MPP's barbecue today over education cuts.

Oh, and I held a union meeting on Friday.

We went to the climate protest last week...which of course has been a bit overshadowed by the impeachment thing. Oh well.

Postcards to Voters is gearing up for this year's November elections in Virginia, Kentucky, and Louisiana.

Taking state legislatures -- or at least limiting Republican majorities -- is essential to the redistricting fights coming after the 2020 census.

If people are interested in a one-stop site for all the relevant fights on the ballot this year: http://whatsontheballot.com/

(This list includes legislatures, DAs, Sheriffs, and ballot initiatives.)

Massachusetts legislation--election audits

[personal profile] redbird 2019-09-29 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
On the suggestion/request of Common Cause, I wrote to my Massachusetts state legislators asking them to support a total of four bills to strengthen election audits. I deleted the Common Cause email (which wanted me to use their website to write the same letter to both my representatives), but I saved the email to William Brownsberger, which has the bill numbers: S. 388, H. 694, H. 687, and H 721.

I try, when I get something like this, to check and see what if any position my representatives have taken; my other rep, Dave Rogers, is co-sponsoring the three House bills, so he got a shorter email thanking him for having done that. I think that, in general, emails will get more attention than petitions, but an email that's at least a bit different from however many others the person gets is probably more effective than one that could be seen as "oh, another person who entered her name and address on the Common Cause website."
