Action: Ask for confederate statues to be removed from Congress

Nancy Pelosi has called for confederate statues to be removed from the Capitol Building. In many cases, this is actually "up to the states", because each state can send up to two statues to be included in the National Statuary Hall Collection to "honor persons notable in their history."

You can find out which statues are representing your state and whether you need to contact your representatives to push for their removal at this site:

I read that as "Confederate states" and was like, that is an unexpectedly bold move from Pelosi!

Yeah, Californians, our state chose to send Junípero Serra and Ronald Reagan. GIT.

Here's the letter I sent to my state senator, which you should feel free to use as a template:

Dear Senator/Assemblymember ___,

Statues and their removal have been very much in the news lately. I recently learned that states are permitted to choose their representative statues in the Capitol -- and that CA has apparently chosen to send Junípero Serra, noted agent of indigenous genocide and forced conversion, and Ronald Reagan, another noted racist. Surely we can do better than that.

I ask that you push to remove and replace these statues to better represent California. Personally, I have always thought Dolores Huerta very statuesque.

Sincerely,
___
