Election results!

Use this post to talk about the results.

Are there any (unexpectedly) good results in your district or state? Or in districts where you've been volunteering though organisations like Swing Left or Sister District? Are there any results you're excited about for candidates outside your district that you've been following/donating to (perhaps from the various slates we've posted)?

Share the squee or commiserate about near misses!

(Posted early because I'm out for the evening and want to make sure this is ready for when you need it!)

I'm not sure if this is unexpected, but I'm extremely glad that the guy who used to be my representative is not my new senator!
Also, my district's new state senator is apparently the first openly LGBT member of my state's senate.

I think it's a pretty fucking big blue wave. Not a blue tsunami, which was kinda unfair of the media to hype, and a lot of the long-shot very publicized races (Beto, others) didn't work out for Dems, but this is AMAZING, in terms of how many votes are needed to flip this many seats while taking all the fucking gerrymandering into account. I'm not ecstatic, but I think this is a very very very good result. There's also a lot of flipping going on in gubernatorial and state senate races, I think.

I mean, yesterday people were going "It might all come down to California!" (in an obvious echo of 2016 and how many pop votes Hillary got there) "We might not know for a MONTH if the house depends on CA!" and they've already flipped a big majority in the house and the CA polls haven't even closed yet. That such a big flip happened so quickly, despite the gerrymandering and without CA, is a huge thing.

And I mean there's something like 76K votes separating Gillum and his opponent. That is pretty fucking amazing And there was still disenfranchisement going on, in FL and GA. Stacey Abrams supporters are saying don't give up with like 99% of the vote in because there still could be a statistical chance of a runoff. There have been losses, yeah, but close ones. At least one runoff already happening (GA). The difference in the Walker race right now is I think 7K votes!

....meanwhile MSNBC has the white male conservative asswipe who keeps dominating the conversation and going "NO BLUE WAVE! NO BIG WIN!" and "exurban!" every five minutes and Andrea Mitchell is literally sitting there looking at her phone because he won't let anyone else talk. It's a pretty diverse panel (two white women, two black guys) and this white guy is STILL BABBLING. ...oh wait no, Tom Brokaw just replaced one of the white guys. WTF is he still doing up at this hour.

Yeah, this is fucking awesome. We were never gonna take the Senate, despite the WAVE hype. It would have had to be tsunami like you said, and that was dumb hype.

Oh, Tom. I am old enough to remember when Brokaw his buds did news. With no commentary. Just fucking news. I don't know how this guy even looks at today's news broadcasters with a straight face. I watched mostly CNN, but even they were OMG NOW TRUMP WILL PAYYY! Which, ok, yes yay, but dude. NEWS. JUST GIVE ME NEWS. I can come to DW to squee! /get off my lawn.

AHAHAHA, my dad was a news writer/reporter and worked with Jennings and would sit there and analyze the Big Three network anchors with me and it was pretty fascinating. He was just flabberghasted at what news had turned into.

Meanwhile a NINETY-THREE VOTE DIFFERENCE in MN, holy fucking shit. There are a LOT of close races.

"The Alaska house race!" the MSNBC guy says with totally forced enthusiasm. Heh, I bet they want to just go home and go to bed.

Lizzie Panill Fletcher is going to be my new rep in the US House, so that's awesome. But then there's Beto to grieve over, so I have some conflicted feelings tonight.

Massachusetts:
Charlie Baker (R) re-elected governor.
Otherwise the Dems took it.

Tony Evers and Mandela Barnes are the next governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, of Wisconsin! :d :D :D Josh Kaul is attorney general, and Sarah Godlewski is our treasurer! And we keep our excellent secretary of state, and Baldwin as Senator. :D!

As someone who lives in OH-10, I think we did great considering that this district is drawn as basically how do we keep Dayton from getting a Democrat representative. To the point that Mike Turner hasn't held a town hall or anything open to all constituents in literal years.

I'm hoping Ohio's redistricting reform will change this in another 4 years.

Ohio state races all went R. ;_;

Locally, however, we flipped three judges blue, including one whom I feel partially responsible for (and the county recorder red).

ballot initiative wins

[personal profile] redbird 2018-11-07 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Both the ballot initiatives I made calls for—Yes on 3, to keep trans rights here in Mass., and Yes on 4 to restore 1.4 million Floridians' voting rights—passed.

That's both good news objectively, and satisfying in terms of my work being rewarded. I don't like phone banking, but lots of data show it helps, so...

My partner [personal profile] cattitude couldn't deal with calling/talking to strangers either. So he appointed himself as my support: I talked to people, and he told me "well done" and supplied a home-cooked dinner. And money is useful too.

Katie Hill has won California's 25th District!

[personal profile] rachelmanija campaigned for her and says:

Katie is a staunch liberal who used to run an organization to help homeless people and veterans. She has solid values and admirable politics, and has lived in the district her entire life. She is also a 30-year-old bisexual rock climber who takes in rescue goats.

This is wild. The Florida race might be within the margin to trigger an automatic recount (and nope, the fact that Gillum conceded has no legal implications).

He got 16.9%:

Which I feel is, under the circumstances, a fine showing. That's 1 in 6 voters! And those voters will still be there in two years ...
